Callaway Supernatural Camaro: A Neat Piece Of GM Tuner History

Built in very limited numbers by Callaway, this “Supernatural” Camaro deviated from the company’s usual Corvettes.

Magazines used to feature cool cars. Well, they still do, but back in the 90’s, there was a heavy focus on concept cars and everything from the future. And some folks like Callaway went above and beyond the manufacturers and created their own futuristic cars. Enter the Callaway Supernatural C8.

Coincidence of being named C8 notwithstanding, the Supernatural Camaro was incredible for its time. Silodrome notes the Supernatural Camaro exists in just 18 examples. Perhaps Callaway wanted more focus on their Corvette, but even so, these Camaros were top performers of their day. 170 miles per hour top speed isn’t the fastest car of the day. That belongs to the McLaren F1. But that car was in supercar territory, and new in 1994 stickers at over $800,000. The Supernatural Camaro? About $56,000. Which doesn’t seem that bad, but adjusted for inflation, that’s close to a very steep $120,000. That’s not quite Ferrari 348 money, but uncomfortably close. Makes sense that only 18 were sold…

Either way, this LT1 wonder could hold it’s own. Even though the 348 costs a bunch more, it’s top speed was only a 1 mile per hour advantage. And the LT1 was just a better overall engine. Sure, you had your Optispark issues, but you didn’t have Ferrari headaches. But you could turn heads just as effectively.

Big air scoops were all the rage in this era, and the Supernatural has them in spades. Strakes behind each wheel are signatures of the “CamAerobody” kit that is on all 18 examples. With the additional bump in power, top speed increased by nearly 15 miles per hour. And the body kit plus the LT1 upgrades earns this Camaro the “C8″ designation.

Of course, brakes and suspension are upgraded, too. Callaway wasn’t just about top speed. These cars would be all-round performers. To handle 400 horsepower, brakes, wheels and tires are all upgraded. 18” tires are enormous for 1994 standards. But they house Brembo brakes of the 4-piston caliper variety. Suspension upgrades are centered around anti-roll, with trailing arms and sway bars being subject to upgraded status. While there’s a long list of fast 4th gen Camaros out, it’s cool to see one this complete from a company like Callaway. It’s not just a slapped on power-adder.
