Chevrolet Reportedly Keeping Current Camaro Until 2026

Word on the street is that earlier reports of the Camaro’s demise have been exaggerated.

One of more frustrating aspects to being a Camaro fan is the pervasive feeling of dread. And no, it has nothing to do with the car. It comes in the form of news that Chevrolet will be ceasing Camaro production. Just when we were beginning to accept the news that 2023 would likely mark the end of the Camaro; an unexpected ray of hope emerged from down under.

Australia’s Which Car Wheels recently reported that the mighty muscle car may have gotten a stay of execution. Can we get an Amen?

The article details General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) has locked in a sweet deal with Chevy. GMSV is importing factory-made right-hand-drive C8 Corvettes to Australia. In addition to Chevy getting the mid-engined sports car on the road, they will also be importing muscle to the Australian market with the Camaro SS and ZL1.

According to the article, production of the current sixth-generation Camaro would extend through 2024 to 2026. GMSW is eying the move to boost the Camaro’s presence in the Australian market. This move would be a boon to enthusiasts and race fans alike.

“GMSV is looking at reintroducing RHD-converted Camaros in both SS and ZL1 spec as soon as 2021 ahead of competing against arch-rival Ford Mustangs in Supercars in 2022 [racing] under the new Gen3 rules,” the article states.

However, on the flipside, the news does seem to imply that the sixth-gen Camaro is unlikely to see a new generation anytime soon. Introduced in 2016, the current generation Camaro has got the high-performance, ride quality, and major horses right out of the box. But seeing how far Chevy took the Corvette, we know they have the means to deliver an epic, game-changing seventh-generation of American muscle

While sales certainly influence automakers moreso than history; it would be a big mistake for Chevy to kill off one of its most iconic nameplates. And each step forward keeping the Camaro going strong is progress. It does warm the cockles of our heart to see Chevy put some long overdue support behind the Camaro.
