Drifting + Corvette = DRIFTVETTE

By -

The Corvette is a powerful, rear wheel drive, sports car, with a limited-slip rear differential, but does it make a good drift car?

The C5 Chevrolet Corvette is an amazing high-performance car. The chassis is proven on the track, winning championships on all levels of motorsports. The C5 Corvette was designed and engineered from the ground up to be a world-class sports car. It is also one of the best values for performance on the market today. The C5 was built from 1997-2004. Now, the earliest models are 20 years old and they are getting more affordable. So inexpensive in fact, that Youtuber Taylor Ray bought one to take drifting; of course, he called it DRIFTVETTE.

Taylor bought the 2001 C5 Corvette completely stock and has been drifting it since day one. In fact, he has a video of him drifting it in completely stock form, to set a baseline of performance. Over the course of several months, Taylor has been modifying his Driftvette to be a better drift car. Drifting requires similar modifications to a track car. Taylor has install videos of adding, race seats, coil-over suspension, a racing steering wheel, aftermarket wheels, and an exhaust. These are all typical of any other track car. So how is a drift car setup any different?

Drift cars spend most of their time on track sideways. The amount of steering angle is the limit to how sideways a car can get drifting. Most drift cars add steering angle-kits to increase the angle of steering available. Taylor had to build an angle kit, since the C5 is not a popular drift car. He went so far as to buy a 3d printer and design an angle mod piece. He takes this project seriously.

In this video, Taylor Ray attends a local drift event in his Driftvette. He burns through a few sets of tires, while keeping the Corvette sideways. It looks like a ton of fun. Hearing the LS V8 roar as it turns tires into smoke, is as good as an apple pie on the fourth of July. As the C5 continues to get less expensive, more people will be getting them sideways. The only downside to the Corvette is the bodywork. The whole body built out of a composite plastic. When you go sideways, sometimes you bump into things, like other cars or walls. One thing is for sure, the LS V8 under the hood will out live the composite body, with most drifters behind the wheel. Let us know what you think in the comments.
