K.I.T.T. Pontiac Firebird

Firebird is a fully functional version of car from Knight Rider, owned by Michael Knight himself.

If you were a kid growing up in the 1980s, you likely spent some time watching the black Pontiac Firebird shown here. This car was the star of the show Knight Rider and along with its human co-star David Hasselhoff, the car named K.I.T.T. and Michael Knight solved all sorts of capers. The car in the television show talked, drove itself and was equipped with all sorts of high tech gadgets inside and out, making it the dream car for many children of the ‘80s.

If you ever dreamed of owning a K.I.T.T. Pontiac Firebird of your own, there is one listed for sale on the Live Auctioneers website, but this isn’t just any Hollywood car replica. This Firebird is straight from the collection of David Hasselhoff, so whoever buys this isn’t just buying a replica – they are literally buying K.I.T.T. from Michael Knight.

And get this…if the winning bidder pays enough, Michael Knight will actually deliver the car to you! It doesn’t get a whole lot cooler than that, but it is going to take a very wealthy ‘80s kid to make that dream come true.

The Hoff’s Firebird

The Live Auctioneers website has many personal items of David Hasselhoff, including other memorabilia from the show, but nothing in the collection is as cool as his custom Pontiac Firebird named K.I.T.T. The sale page doesn’t state the year of the car, nor does it talk about the engine or transmission. We imagine that it is a stock 305-cubic inch V8 mated to an automatic, but we don’t know for sure.

What we do know is that inside and out, this is K.I.T.T. It has the pacing red light in the extended nose with the menacing “whir-whir, whir-whir”. On the inside, it has the custom dash with all of the unique readouts, buttons and even the advanced diagnostic computer screen. We don’t know for sure, but we would imagine that one of the buttons allows this car to “talk” with records of the voice of actor William Daniels.

Even if there aren’t recorded sayings of K.I.T.T.’s voice, this Pontiac Firebird is an absolutely flawless example of the television car. After all, it does belong to Michael Knight himself.

Handing Over the Keys

The bad news is that this Pontiac Firebird current has 9 bids, the highest of which is $425,000. The expected selling range is $175,000 to $300,000, so the odds are good that $425,000 is over the reserve price. We don’t know the reserve price, but in this case, there is a reason why that is important. According to the listing, if the buyer pays more than 25% over the reserve, Hasselhoff will deliver the car to you.

In other words, if you buy this Pontiac Firebird and pay enough, Michael Knight will come to your house and hand you the keys to K.I.T.T. It is the childhood dream of many ‘80s kids come true. He will show up, hand over his high tech, high performance Firebird and disappear off into the sunset. It is as though Michael Knight is retiring and literally handing you the keys to his crime-fighting kingdom.

As long as you are spending nearly a half-million dollars, you might as well buy Michael Knight’s racing jumpsuit and his Team Knight racing jacket, both of which are listed for sale from his collection on the auction website.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
