Fifth-gen Camaro’s tranny swap was put together using a plug and play kit, making it a pretty compelling build.

As the years go by, automakers are continuously developing new things, all with a few goals in mind – reducing costs, improving profitability, and, of course, generally making things better. This doesn’t always work out as planned, and in the case of the 10-speed automatic transmission co-developed by GM and Ford, well, that particular piece has its known issues in certain applications, though also, some undeniable benefits. Thus, it isn’t terribly surprising to see someone swap that modern gearbox into a fifth-gen Camaro, either.

Recently, Reddit user chucks97ss posted a clip of this completed 10-speed fifth-gen Camaro swap, and it certainly looks to be up and running just fine. In fact, in the short clip, the car is simply scooting down the street, and we can clearly hear the difference the quick-shifting gearbox makes. The 10L80/10L90 is known for its ability to fire rapidly through gears, after all, and that’s precisely why so many people love the thing in performance applications such as this.

According to Chuck, this swap functions just as one would expect from an OEM setup – the paddle shifters work, as do all of the factory electronics like stability and traction control, which he accomplished by using a plug and play harness from Powertrain Swap Solutions. The whole thing reportedly cost around $9,000 to put together, and it makes for a pretty enticing arrangement – especially in this fifth-gen Camaro, which has a ProCharger under its hood, to boot.

As for the 10-speed retrofit kit itself, that part costs $3,000 and fits a wide variety of applications, including this Camaro generation, of course. Aside from retaining all factory features, the kit comes with a plug and play harness, a pre-programmed and unlocked transmission control module, and a conversion module. Owners don’t perform any sort of re-programming along with installation, though PSS notes that customers may want to go that route to achieve “optimum performance.”

Regardless, this certainly seems like a great way to modernize the fifth-gen Camaro a bit, and given the fact that a lot of folks love the newer 10-speed, we imagine that there are at least a handful of owners out there willing to take this particular plunge.
