Hertz Selling Off Hendrick Special Edition Camaro Rental Cars
Hertz/Hendrick Motorsports 2020 Camaro SS and ZL1 coupes are looking for permanent renters with heavy right feet.
Last September, we brought you the news that Hertz and Hendrick Motorsports were teaming up to create the ultimate Chevrolet Camaro rental cars. The 224 SS and ZL1 models they produced had unique black and yellow paintjobs and more power than their stock counterparts. You can still get one of the special Camaros, but you don’t have to worry about returning it with a full tank.
At the risk of making the understatement of the century, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a harsh impact on the travel industry. That ranges from airlines to hotels to – yep, you guessed it – rental car agencies like Hertz. According to GM Authority, “Hertz is now doing all it can to avoid bankruptcy – including selling some of its cars that it no longer needs.” Hertz told CNET‘s Roadshow in an email, “We are reducing expenses, deferring capital expenditures, and adjusting fleet levels and staffing based on the significant decline in travel demand. Importantly, conversations with our lenders are ongoing and we remain in discussions with the US Treasury for support.”
In an effort to free up some cash, Hertz is looking to give the 2020 SS and ZL1 you see here new homes. Aside from their distinctive exteriors, both cars sport performance upgrades.
The SS model benefits from the combination of Chevy’s cold air intake and cat-back exhaust system, which increases the LT1‘s output to 480 horsepower. Other goodies include a strut tower brace and a set of black 20-inch wheels.
The SS’s ZL1 cousin gets the biggest performance boost. The Hertz/Hendrick mechanical treatment includes a new Callaway supercharger that gives the LT4 750 Hellcat-stomping horses. Like the SS, it puts its power down through a set of black wheels.
The interior is just as black and yellow as the outside, although it does feature some red accent stitching on the seats, steering wheel, shifter and center console lid.
Power-hungry travelers have racked up 2,497 miles on the SS’s odometer. In the time it took to write this post, it seems someone agreed to Hertz’s asking price for the 3,369-mile ZL1. We wish the eventual owners of these instantly recognizable parts of Camaro history many (hopefully trouble-free) years of enjoyment.
