Mecum Chicago 2017: 4 Righteous Camaros and Firebirds

By -

1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Get your fill of American pony-car dream machines from the best of the Detroit Big Three at this upcoming auction.

We always love seeing what goes up for sale at the big auction houses. The upcoming Mecum Chicago in Schaumburg, Illinois, includes a relative dearth of LS-powered machines like other auctions. However, we still found a few special GM pony cars up for auction on October 5 to 9. Click here for the full listings, but here are four we could easily enjoy.

2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z2

2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Dear previous owner: Thanks for modifying this last-year fourth-gen tastefully. The Rally Red paint looks great and the LS1-powered F-Body could drop into your lap straight out of the ‘90s hangover that was the year 2002. If the 17-inch SLP wheels still look good today, only the rectangular exhaust exits look a little dated. Otherwise, this one looks like a fun, period-correct street machine with some neat suspension and brake upgrades.

Auction Item T52 (Thursday, October 5)

1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Blue

Unrestored 1978 Chevrolet Camaro

The world seldom loses their mind over late second-gen Camaros. We don’t expect this ‘78 Z28 to bring heaps of cash, but we think it’s pretty cool to see a low-mileage (38,000 on the clock), one-owner F-Body like this up for sale. While the original Small-Block Chevy shows its age a bit, the “mostly original” blue paint and all-original black interior looks impeccable. The original owner also optioned this one with A/C, power windows, power steering, and power brakes. The only power it lacks is horsepower, but this is a beast of its era.

Auction Item F5 (Friday, October 6)

1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Convertible

This IROC-Z comes to auction as part of the Herman Dierks Collection, a six-car auction set that showcases Dierks’ preference for red convertibles. While the class Bel Airs and topless C2 Corvettes will bring big money, we love this IROC with a perfect red interior. Seriously, this kind of double red was a product entirely of the 1980s and early 1990s and it’s fantastic. This one comes to auction with just 21,000 miles

Auction Item F110 (Friday, October 6)

1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 10th Anniversary

1979 Pontiac Trans Am 10th Anniversary

If you’re into late second-gen Firebirds, Mecum Chicago has about as much Screaming Chicken as you can handle. However, this 10th Anniversary TA is special not because of the car itself but because the auction sale proceeds go to a good cause. The winner of this silver ‘79 will send his or her money to Toronto’s Princess Margaret Cancer Center, a leading cancer research center.

As for the car, it’s a cool 10th Anniversary Trans Am with a 6.6-liter V8 (aka the Oldsmobile 403), the period-correct 8-track player, T-Tops, and even the leather pouches for the T-Top glass. It may not be the most valuable Firebird on the planet, but you’ll certainly garner some attention in this killer F-Body.
