Mecum Indy to Feature Star-Studded Corvette Ensemble
‘The Corvette Evolution Collection,’ slated for May 10-18, includes a wide array of unique, valuable and rare cars from multiple generations.
Every couple of months or so, Mecum Auctions holds a massive sale in various parts of the country, and each is typically chock full of interesting, rare, historically notable, or incredibly expensive machinery. This is especially true of the Corvette, which has long been America’s collectible sports car of choice, and Mecum’s upcoming Indianapolis event once again has plenty of amazing examples of that model to choose from. In fact, perhaps the highlight of that event (set to take place May 10-18) is what the auction house calls “The Corvette Evolution Collection,” and it has plenty of amazing cars to choose from.
In fact, there are a grand total of 34 special models up for grabs at The Corvette Evolution Collection, spanning the car’s first several generations. There are plenty of notable rides among this group, but two, in particular, caught our eye. The first is a stellar 1970 Corvette ZR1 convertible, which is one of only 25 Corvettes produced in that particular model year with the ZR1 Special Purpose Engine Package.
This very special, very rare Corvette ZR1 came equipped from the factory with GM’s LT1 powerplant rated to produce 370 horsepower, the M22 four-speed manual transmission, Positraction rear differential, and a host of upgraded parts such as heavy-duty brakes, a unique aluminum radiator, the transistor ignition, and unique springs, shocks, and stabilizer bars.
It’s in truly fantastic condition, and has achieved Bloomington Gold Certification, to boot, all with just 46,500 miles showing on the odometer.
Another Corvette that caught our eye for obvious reasons is this 2003 50th anniversary convertible, which has a mere 970 miles showing on the odometer. It’s a well-preserved example that retains its window sticker, along with carbon copies of the purchase agreement, certificate of sale, retail installment contract, and other purchase documents, plus copies of the cashier’s check and receipt from the dealership where it was purchased as well.
Though it won’t exactly light anyone’s hair on fire performance wise, this anniversary model is equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 mated to a four-speed automatic, which sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.
The 50th anniversary package is obviously present, giving it Anniversary Red paint and a Shale interior, plus nice options like dual-zone climate control, a head-up display, and even a CD and VHS tape explaining what makes it so special.
Of course, this is just a small sample of the many cool cars up for grabs as part of Mecum Indy’s “The Corvette Evolution Collection,” though you can view every lot included in that group by heading over here.
