Rumors of a mid-engined Corvette have been around for about as long as I’ve been alive. But lately, there murmurs have grown to a roar.

Now, there appears to be proof that Chevrolet is indeed working on a mid-engined exotic Corvette. Check out these latest spy photos shared by our friends at Car and Driver.

So it appears to be a mix of a Holden Ute with a Corvette roof. The Ute configuration leaves a lot of room behind the driver to store the engine powering the mid-engined Corvette.

Separating it more from just a Holden Ute replacement, or a new SSR, is the widened body. Obviously, this won’t be the production version, but it appears that the General is working on the suspension components and more.

The timing is a bit dubious. We believe that Ford will be pulling out a bunch of new performance vehicles, including the Shelby GT350R in Detroit next week.

Conveniently leaving one of these mules out to be photographed shifts the conversation away from Ford, even if Chevrolet doesn’t show this vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show.

What say you all? Is this really the mid-engined Corvette we’ve been waiting for? Or is it something else, like a new Holden Ute or an SSR? Let us know in the forums!
