Modern-day 455 Super Duty Trans Am Is Real & Coming Soon
Though Pontiac is no more, the Trans Am 455 Super Duty lives again. Only 50 will be made, however.
“I believe that the Trans Am is arguably the most recognizable American muscle car in history,” says Tod Warmack, co-founder of Trans Am Worldwide (TAW). “In every one of us, there lives a little bit of the ‘Bandit;’ a little bit of the outlaw.”
Warmack was 16 when he saw the iconic 1977 movie, Smokey and The Bandit. Like any boy his age, seeing Burt Reynolds (who makes an appearance in the above video documentary from the company’s YouTube page) speed off in that superbly-tuned 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am must have ignited the American muscle “fire” in him. Getting his very first Trans Am at 19 must made him tremble with fervor.
With Pontiac being defunct as of 2010, hopes for a modern Firebird Trans Am were dashed. However, Warmack and his brother, Scott Warmack, have something big to say about that.
Trans Am 455 Super Duty Revival
TAW is the sole licensee and builder of these post-industry Trans Am Super Duties. Though only 50 of these will be made, the sheer magnitude of attitude these cars possess will turn heads when they become available. As of now, there is no set release date, so you will need to be patient.
“The (original) Super Duty had a really big engine…a really big, dangerous engine,” says Tom Sawyer, engineer and designer for TAW. “The 2017 Super Duty uses a 455 and has massive amounts of power—and we knew we had to do it. That’s Super Duty.”
The modern engine provides massive amounts of power—we’re talking 1000 horses, 1046 pounds-feet of torque within a mostly carbon fiber chassis. Of course with all that power, this beastly bird requires nothing short of Brembo brake stopping power, paired with a three-piece wheel set dressed with Michelin Pilot Super Sport fluorescence tires.
