Rick Hendrick Motorsports Edition Camaro Goes to Auction
Supercharged fifth-gen Camaro set for appearance at Mecum Indianapolis, is the first one built by storied NASCAR shop.
NASCAR is full of legendary names: Dale Earnhardt. Richard Petty. Jeff Gordon. Kyle Busch. The list goes on and on, and it’s not limited to drivers, either. Though Rick Hendrick drove in just four races in his career, he’s better known for his work in building winning race cars for Hendrick Motorsports and JR Motorsports.
And when he’s not helping Johnson and William Byron take the checkered flag, he’s building some badass rides for the street. According to GM Authority, one such machine is heading for auction: the first-ever Camaro Hendrick Motorsports Edition.
Back in 2010, the Camaro returned to the showroom after eight years out of production. Unlike the swoopy wedge design of the fourth-gen pony, the new fifth-gen car pulled its looks from the first-gen car of the Sixties. Hendrick decided this new retro-modern ride — especially the SS — would be the perfect platform for his vision.
The magic of the Camaro Hendrick Motorsports Edition is in the 6.2-liter LS3 V8. From the factory, it made 426 horses and 420 lb-ft of torque. After Hendrick and his crew dropped a supercharger on top of it, though, the figures jumped to 588 ponies and 555 lb-ft of torque.
Inside, you can handle all that power through a Hurst short-throw shifter connected to the six-speed manual, while also seated upon red and black leather. The Camaro features plenty of red trim, too, especially along the top of the dash, where Hendrick’s own autograph resides on a special plate; another autograph can be found on the front passenger headrest.
Outside, this rare Camaro roars through a set of performance stainless steel exhaust, and stops with the aid of Brembo discs. The optional coil-overs make cornering a breeze, and the forged aluminum wheels add the right pop to this one-of-a-kind ride.
With just 4,970 miles on the odometer, the high-performance Camaro will cross the red carpet of Mecum Indianapolis Thursday, June 25 along with a few other Camaros from across the decades. We can’t wait to see how much this piece of history will fetch.
