Sixth-gen Camaro ZL1: Best Camaro Ever Made?

By -

Admitted Mustang fan drives a 2019 Camaro ZL1 and can’t stop waxing poetic about its many positive attributes.

Throughout the last few decades, Chevrolet has given us some very special Camaro models to enjoy. From the old school first-gen SS to the modern day one, multiple generations of the Z/28, and lots of other good stuff in between. So when we saw the title for this video from the YouTube channel That Dude in Blue (hosted and run by David Patterson), it certainly peaked our interest. Mainly because he declares the newest Camaro ZL1 to be the “best Camaro ever made.”

Making this bold claim even more interesting is the fact that Patterson is a big time Mustang and import guy. He currently owns two Mustangs, in fact, and zero Camaros. Regardless, he’s clearly impressed after spending some wheel time in a 2019 model ZL1. “The ZL1 was a great car when it came out,” Patterson said. “This, though. Holy smokes what an animal this thing is. The newer generation ZL1 is faster than the C7 Z06. That is something I never thought could happen.”

He even has nice things to say about the cabin. “The ZL1’s interior is by far the nicest. The door panels even have suede. Everything feels nicer – the seats are very comfortable, the paddles feel nice.” But the driving experience left an even bigger impression. “The Camaro ZL1 has maybe the best turn-in I’ve ever experienced in a muscle car, other than the GT350,” Patterson says. That goodness carries over to the brakes, which Patterson says “are massive and they do the job.”

And of course, you can’t help but love the supercharged 6.2-liter in the ZL1. But as Patterson notes, it isn’t just some big mill stuffed in a car, old school hot rod style. “They have made this car in a way where handling and horsepower somehow go together,” he says. Unlike, you know, those Hellcat things Dodge pumps out. And Patterson loves the styling, too. “In my opinion, this generation of the ZL1 is the best-looking Camaro ever made,” he says.

It all ties together in one seriously impressive package. “I feel like a freaking king in these mountains,” Patterson concludes. “I feel like I can literally do anything in this car. This is bananas.” Coming from a Mustang guy, that’s pretty high praise, we’d say.
