If you’re dead set on buying a 2nd gen Trans Am because the Bandit drove one, you should probably get the 1977 Special Edition he used in the first Smokey and the Bandit. But if you don’t need all that pop culture cache and you just want a badass 2nd gen example, how about this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM 10th Anniversary Edition?

It’s been almost 40 years since “Smokey and the Bandit” hit theaters, but the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am featured in it is still an automotive icon.

Since the time when it made its debut in 1969 to when the last car rolled off the assembly line in 2002, these timeless rides have always been admirable and praiseworthy.

This week’s Throwback video takes us back to 1988, when General Motors was pushing the young, sporty Pontiac brand with a catchy, wonderfully 80s theme song titled “Ride, Pontiac Ride”.

While we would be quick to say that all General Motors cars are pretty outstanding, there are certainly differences between the different models that are out there.

If there is a man to idolize as an up and coming engineer or even mechanic, it is “Smokey” Yunick. Henry “Smokey” Yunick, famous for his innovations in NASCAR, automotive performance, and several patents we take for granted today, it’s hard to believe he did not have an engineering degree.
