Silverado Top Gear

On this past week’s episode of Top Gear, the gang tackle American pickup trucks in an off-road rescue adventure in Canada. Richard Hammond is stranded on a mountain top in the Canadian Rockies and James May and Jeremy Clarkson must go save him.

They both decide to use pickup trucks. Jeremy Clarkson chooses the Hennessy-modified Ford VelociRaptor, while James May opts for a Silverado HD.

WARNING: This post does contain spoilers. The episode has aired both on BBC 2 in the UK and BBC American in the United States, but if you haven’t seen the episode yet, you might not want to read on.

The Silverado HD with the Z71 package is the anti-thesis to the Ford Raptor. While the Raptor does what it needs to do with high speed and high-flying antics, the Silverado just uses brute force via torque.

The Silverado HD has 765 lb/ft of twist, which should make climbing the path to save Hammond relatively effortless. It also fits James May’s driving style; slow and methodical.

And it works, for the most part. James May doesn’t win the challenge of getting to Richard Hammond first, but that’s because the Silverado broke a driveshaft during the last moments of the rescue attempt.

However, James is still in love with the Silverado pickup truck. He even states he’s surprised more of them aren’t imported to the United Kingdom.
