Turbo LS Mustang

Ford Mustang Cobra clone packs a boosted 408-cubic inch turbo LS, but it is still street-friendly.

We all know that the best way to build a fast Fox Body Mustang is to install a turbo LS, but not everyone has the mechanical abilities or the money to handle the swap on their own. If you have been dreaming of rocking a “Five-Oh Mustang” with a boosted Chevy engine that will run in the 8s and serve as a fun cruiser, this 1993 Ford from the LS1Tech Marketplace might be your dream car.

Posted by zapp109, this 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra clone has gone a 9.10 and it could run in the 8s with some practice, all while being built to handle the rigors of street cruising. In other words, this is an ideal buy for someone who wants a really, really quick street car with parts from Ford and Chevrolet.

Turbo LS Mustang Introduction

When the OP posted this 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra clone with the turbo LS, he provided a long mod list detailing pretty much everything that has been done to the car. He also offered some details on the car beyond the mod list, explaining what it has run in the past, what it could run and what has been done with the car in terms of daily usage since being built.

Turbo LS Mustang Front

“Known issues.. Paint is good but not perfect, rear bumper has some cracks, rear hatch was fixed but has dents. No one ever notices flaws. Sometimes when hot at idle slight smoke which I believe is ring related or turbo seal. LQ motor with 408 stroke piston goes down further than cylinder walls so that’s why I say rings. Car never smokes under throttle. Since the converter was rebuilt/ tightened sometimes especially when warm when put in reverse it trys to drag the rpm down. This is a common issue with multi disk and 4l80e. They actually make a kit to fix it but I just hold the brake and give it some gas. Front has slight vibration at like 65mph, people seem to think it’s the M&H front tires. It’s not bad just trying to mention everything.

I built this car over the past 6 years. Im to the point in my life where I don’t want to fix anything anymore or really work much on cars. The car just sits and it’s time to part with it. Although all the parts listed make you believe it’s an all-out drag car I assure you it is not. It’s very comfortable to cruise and gets about 17-20mpg depending if you lock converter and stop and go obviously trying to save gas. Over the past 6 years the car probably has about 20-25 passes tops on it. The car has never been over 19psi. Never had race gas. Only seen the dyno the day it was done with old heads, cam and hptuners car made 902 whp letting off at 6k at 16psi boost (locked converter). I have tuned the car myself using the holley. Nearly 2 years ago was last hard run I did with the car at the track it went 9.10 @ 153 at 17-18 psi leaving pretty easy. Last November I wanted to do a 8 second pass but the OLD wavetrac broke at 60ft. Wavetrac covered the diff for free and upgraded the diff. The car WILL go 8s no problem. But for the most part I cruise the car. I drove the car to Ocean city and back MANY times for cruise week. My 2 kids ride in the back. I have a ton of build pictures, a ton of receipts and instructions. I have a lot of money and time into the car I love this car and never thought I would sell it.”

The OP also included 15 pictures of the Mustang inside, outside and under the hood, and the car looks pretty sharp from every angle, but the underhood shot of the turbo LS is clearly the money shot.

Turbo LS Build

The OP included a long mod list for his 1993 Mustang Cobra clone, but since the turbo LS is the main focus, we have only included the details of the engine build. Finally, the seller shared a video of his turbo LS Mustang starting up and going for a cruise, with a good hit around the 3:20 mark. Ultimately, the video isn’t all that exciting, but it shows that this Chevy-powered Ford is a smooth street car that can run in the 8s with a little work and a little seat time.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
