I ran the stock steel ds in my '98. Never had any problems. My buddy ran 10.64 in his 2000 firehawk with the stock aluminum shaft. Tweaked it out of balance a bit though.

A stock driveshaft will handle the ~450rwhp to run high 10s.

Did he snap the shaft or the yoke?

I have a buddy who snapped his shaft (not joint) on 17" nittos and cam only also.
As long as you have a loop, it won't hurt anything. I know at least three guys that left them in there just to see it break, so they can put pics of broken driveshafts on their website. I guess its cool.
