as far as the tranny goes i think its a crapshoot,. but as far as the rear end goes i havent heard anyone breaking their rear end with 2.73's. i run the 16" bfg drag radials. with your mods and some traction i would say really low 12's or high elevens are possible, the day i ran the 12.42, i tried to stall it to about 3500rpms, i spun some on the take off, so i think i have another tenth maybe 2 tenths pushing, if i get some better tires or get lucky and hook. the suspension mods with some drag radials will get you better results.

get you some ET streets, cut a 1.5 60', and see how quick it is
you never responded to what your trap speed was. in my LT1 i'm getting 110 trap on my 12.1 run.

2.73's are the stock gear, and are made to last a long time, while at the same time sacrificing some performance.
I've never heard of anyone getting worried about a stock GU2 rear with slicks, its probably the strongest stock setup you could have.
The bigger ratio you go, the smaller the teeth. You can pound 2.73's all day and all night, but thinner tooth gears like 4.10's will be more susceptible to failure, especially if you like to visit the track here and there.
