backwoods, lookin sexy...

so far this is what ive got tied up in my project

160ft 1 5/8 4130 --- 500$ got a smokin deal

preformed rear rails and crossmember 2x3 sq tubing 150$
- the only reason i orderd them was cuz i wasnt sure i had enough tubing to do everything i wanted

Complete dana 60 out of a 1 ton ford 20$

- i still have to go through it and rebuild it, narrow it and fab brackets

Stock 10 bolt with 4 link brackets so i can cruise around on the street with ZR1s if i want - - free

So thats roughly 700 bucks in what ive got into it now, add another 500 for the 4 link, rod ends and shocks puts me at 1200 in just parts and im not paying for labor

I may end up just buying a d60 from moser so thats roughly another 2k with brakes. then figure another 1000 for wheels and tires.

So a grand total of 4k for parts and no labor.

Im looking at:

600 in steel tubing and frame rails, swingouts
1500 in labor
350 in wheels, tires
250 fourlink
600 coilovers

so around 4000 grand total. still not to bad

just out of curiosity, how much weight will all that tubing add to the weight of the car?
I know you chopping alot of the factory body off but that tubing is pretty heavy.

4130 chromoly is around 3.5lbs per ft so figure 160ft = 560lbs

but ya figure everything would be close to evening out after weight reduction and lighter components

il agree with ya there i couldnt bring my self to chop up a ss especially a 02. if you were serious about pursueing it do what i did and start with a v6 car, you have to gut everything anyway including suspension. Plus insurance is dirt cheap compared to a z28 or SS.

my car ended up lighter even after all my mild steel tubing. the stock floor in the rear is alot heavier than you think. many many layers to cut out.

with a few calculations i came up with moly weighing 1.37 lb per foot and mild steel weighing 1.93 lb per foot. and that is 1 5/8 tubing. which is about right becasue i know from past experience that moly is about 70% the weight of mild steel. anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Thats SOUNDS about right..

A lot of people don't think its worth the extra money.... but it adds up depending on how far you go if you ask me.

A 30% weight savings is a lot if you ask me....

My catalog shows 1 5/8" x .083" chromoly tubing to weigh 1.367 lbs/ft.

I can't find any tubing listed which weighs 3.5 lbs/ft. Even 1 5/8" x .134" wall ERW mild steel only weighs 2.134 lbs/ft.
