Default How does oil reach the cylinders?

What is the mechanism on the LS engine for the cylinders to get oil. Mostly just curious. Seems like a lot of friction going on there, but seems to be a "low priority" for oiling? What am I missing here?

Does it come through the Connecting Rod? I know the Wrist Pin gets lubed too..

The oil escaping from the mains and rod bearings is thrown off the crank on the plane of it's rotation like swinging a wet rag over your head. Much of it is thrown down toward the pan and to the sides, but a good bit is also thrown up toward the cylinder walls and the undersides of the pistons. This is how the rod bushing in most floating-pin rods receives lubrication, too. Crankcase windage also helps throw the oil around - think of a rain storm on a really windy day.

The oil that is "splashed" on the cylinder walls is scraped by the oil control ring. Many performace pistons will have holes drilled in the oil ring land which allow some of the oil to come back down the inside of the piston and some of it will be forced into the pin bosses (forced pin oiling)

I hope that sun is not getting to you out there...

Hy head is getting baked I figured that is how it works, but wnated to hear from others. Seems like cylinder oiling was kind of an afterthought, but I guess it works. Isn't there some engines that actually have nozzles spraying oil up into this area?

Yes, some applications will use oil squirters that spray oil onto the bottom side of the piston crown to cool the piston and decrease detonation.

A lot of top rods now offer an oil passage through the beam to oil the wrist pins. Splash does just fine on most builds though.

When using oil squirters what forces the oil through the squirter?

The oil pump. Squirters are attached to an oil gallery that is under pressure from the pump, usually a feed from the main bearing area.

Look at the new supercharged ZR1 motor for a good up-to-date application of oil spray onto the bottom of the piston. It's a great way to reduce piston temps in boosted motors.

This isnt new... its been around for many years. Even the cobalt LSJ and LNF motors have this...(and those are the more recent applications)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I read somewhere that there was either not enough room for squirters or insufficient material to machine to create mounting areas the squirters?

Thanks for clearing pressure and supply up for me DeltaT. On another note, do squirters under a valve cover also receive the pressure and supply from the oil pump or are they based more on directing the flow of oil through the heads/valvetrain areas through the squirter?

Todd isn't this kind of a rookie question for somebody who's built motors before?
