Painting LS1
Hey just wanted to know what the best way to paint a block is? What all would I have to mask? Could I just pull pull the block out yank the headers off and paint? or would I need to mask every spot that has a gasket?

if you left it mostly assembled you have to mask off everything you dont want to get paint on. some people end up doing the ends and oil pan but if it were me i would just paint the engine block and thats it. my personaly favorite way to paint a block is use basecoat clear coat. with holds the best and looks the best. some people will tell you just to rattle can it though.

I'd say the only time I'd even consider painting a block would be if it was fresh from the machine shop & you cleaned the outside of the block very well to ensure no oils are on the metal your painting. Otherwise any paint you use is gonna look like crap later if painted over a dirty greasy surface.
I'm gonna paint my block while building my spare motor up. I'm just gonna use high temp brake caliper paint & call it good. Thats what I used on my coil packs to paint them red & it's holding up great. You will need to plug & mask off every gasket surface & hole in the block you don't want paint to get into also.
I would venture to say the best way to paint it would be on a rotating engine stand so you can see it from all angles.

now would a rattle can application work? Pretty much the only option I have unless I can pick up a cheap paint gun.
Also Ive never seen anyone paint the cylinder heads, is it dangerous? I wouldnt think so But I might as well ask

one thing that has me confused about the pics I posted above is that the exhaust ports and gasket area weren't masked off, hell there is paint in the exhaust port! Would paint in the gasket area for the engine accessories(intake/headers/water pump/etc...)cause a bad seal/be a bad idea?

if you paint anywhere a gasket is supposed to go, i would scrape it with a razor blade or carfully use a grinder with one of those green plastic finger wheels on it. id think the paint on the gasket surface would make for a leak soon. and yes rattle can work just fine. go to autozone or whatever and go to the paint section. all the high temp stuff is useually on the top shelf. kinda pricey, but its made to do what your going to do with it.

this was done 3 stage with engine paint and some spray can.
used ford lite blue engine paint as base, then blue pearl for top color, then engine clear. motor to this day still looks as sharp as this
