Default Rust /Corrosion Around Battery area

Alright if you have one of those GM batteries with the yellow sticker on top those batteries have a problem with leaking Mine did and now I have rust and corrosion in that area.. That should be covered under warranty I would think I mean its not my fault the battery leaked? I am so pissed!!

Give it a shot but I think the dealer would do a hack job fixing it.. remove the battery and neutralize the acid spill with some baking soda.. then lighly sand any rust or corrosion.. clean it well and paint the area.

THEN.. replace the acid filled Delco with a Optima battery.. I use the larger red top (so I can use the cover) but the smaller red top is a direct replacement and will NEVER leak or cause corrosion. If you plan on running a big stereo someday then get the Yellow top battery

My Delco gave up the farm last March and im very happy with my Optima..

I have a sneaking suspicion that warranty will not cover that, you might want to talk to GM's corporate end first, they are always pretty helpful...Good Luck!

I'd go get a small stainless steel wire
brush with the fine wires, like a tooth-
brush, for getting rid of the loose rust
and any delaminated paint. Do that first,
then a box of baking soda in a gallon of
water, spray or paint on until you use it
all up, then a real good rinse with the
hose and dry off. Make sure you hit the
cracks & seams and the sides that you can't
see. Rustoleum red (rusty metal)primer
should settle the surface down, POR-15 makes
a stronger grip and harder surface. The
Rustoleum isn't always compatible with other paints. The POR-15 is expensive and you have
to wait on the mail. Cover either one with
some regular paint that works with the primer.
Check that there hasn't been runoff into more
important, hidden places - body / subframe
seams etc. Might check this before you start
spraying away the evidence.

My factory battery died after 3 years but not until it corroded the battery holder. When I removed the battery the entire area under it was rusted out and the bolts had broken. I cleaned it out and repainted and replaced the battery. Unfortunetly, the terminal cables had corrosion as well and ruined another battery and caused even more rust and corrosion than before.

The mechanic told me that one wasn't suppoeed to leak. He said the yellow taged batteries have a problem and they leak. I think I will fix the corrosion and rust myself.. what paint can I use that will match whats there? Rustolum? (how ever u spell it )

Well, that's good news depending on how you look at it...If you do it yourself don't have too much fun!

* ROUND TWO *

Went to the dealer today for the to survey the damage the Battery has done to my car .. It has made its way back pretty far to the Passegers side. Basicly they told me that they were only responsible for the front area of the car. I am like how do you figure this other part was caused by the battery as well? Then some redneck Painter from the bodyshop said to spray WD-40 On the rusted/Corroided area . I am so pissed I am just going to take the car into a bodyshop on tuesday and let them fix it the proper way . And hopefully they will sue GM for some money to fix the car or the manafactur of the battery

On a lighter note. It is only surface rust and it has taken off some of the Red Paint from underneath the car. If this is fixed properly will this problem come back on its own? I am going to use an Optima Battery for now on this is bullshit.

I also have a 2000 and your posting had me a bit worried Just had to run down to the parking lot and check - found everything clean and dry.

How many of these batteries fail, IOW does it make sense to replace my good battery with an Optima?
