Default LT1 Engine bay is nasty!

I have tried to degreaser/spray bottle and scrubbing bubbles mix and wiping with a rag but it's not working. I know our Optis don't like water so there has got to be a way to clean this. I have 15 years of crap caked on. Any suggestions?

i think i originally cleaned mine with C2 engine cleaner and then hosed it down. but i have also had a shop do an engine detail twice and the second time it did get something wet that caused the car to stall and not start for 10 mins or so. then it misfired for a few miles and then it ran fine.

here is a comparison of how i got my car vs how it looks now FWIW. some stuff has been replaced and the intake has been painted but the engine bay itself is original paint.

here's a pic right after the intake manifold paint and an engine detail. I no longer have the alarm siren in there.

I've pressure washed mine after hosing with with degreaser. Just stay away from the opti and dry it off with compressed air afterwords. I'd steer clear of wiping it down with WD40, it will attract dirt/dust and look terrible. Try to find a spray detailer that shines without leaving a greasy residue.

Is there anything besides the Opti I need to look out for? What about the PCM should I cover it?

no you well be fine... and I use WD40 because it clans and protects and it will not look all shiny(I think when its shiny that looks like ****/Like some one sprayed tire shine an everything) and it will not leave a greasy thick residue. I also dont DD my car and I clean my motor about once a month so I dont worry about the dust and dirt at all(even if it gets dusty just do a quick wipe down and it will look fine)

i bought a new (reman?) one at AZ. What you see is what i got. I never polished it. I probably didn't even need a new alternator when i changed it either because the problem i was having (battery dying every 3-4 days) still occured after i changed the alt. i also had a red top autozone battery which was relatively new (not in either pic) and i now think the battery was defective when i bought it because i swapped that out for a yellow top under warrenty a few years ago and haven't had the problem since.

I hosed down my 1996 Caprice 9C1 LT1 today and when I started the car it was idling high, misfiring and it won't shift out of first gear. The car ran perfectly fine before I did this, what the hell could be the problem?
