Default 3M Headlight Restoration kit. before/after

I got one of the 3m headlight kits at a local store, it was pretty easy, this is about 20 mins of work on each side, including removal of the headlight. basically it is 500/800/3000 grit paper, and a pass with rubbing compound, I'm happy with it, I may work on them a little more later.

If you want to make them a little clearer hit them with some clearcoat. I've done a few of them by just wetsanding them with 800, 1200, and 2000 grit then a couple of coats of clear. It fills in the imperfections from sanding and makes them very clear.

You will be sorry if you use clear coat there is no resaon too ... you get the imperfectiions out by more wet sanding and then hit it with some polishing compound or tooth paste with a buffer and they will look like brand new...been there done that ... if you do them once a year they will always look great...my car is 10 years old with 218,000 + miles on it with the orginal head lites still looking good.

I think he meant to shoot the clear on after the restoration. Not only will it fill in some of the imperfections(that couldn't have been resolve through sanding), it'll help protect the hard work that was put into it.

Yes, thats exaclty what I meant. You still have to do all the wetsanding in the world and honestly the better job you do sanding the better they will turn out. The clear just helps fill in imperfections and leaves a nice protective layer over the headlights. Keeps you from having to repolish them every few months. I used off the shelf clearcoat from advanced. Can't think of the brand off the top of my head. The next time I do a set, I'll do a writeup on it for kicks and giggles. Either way, the ones in this thread turned out great. Its nice to see people taking steps to restore their cars outside of buying ebay lights.

I found it Wal Mart, The Oreillys near my house has a Meguires kit, but i am not sure if its the same. I may try polishing on them a little more then clear coating. I think I am may try to use the remainder of the kit on my truck taillights, they are in real bad shape.
