Question Post Pics Of Your Paitned Rotor Hat

So I received a PM asking my opinion if the rotor hats should be painted.. Now granted the car in questions are RED with black wheels..

Do you think by painting the rotor hat black, will it blend in to much with the wheel, or by leaving it bare metal it has some contrast to the wheel???

I am specifically interested in rotor hats behind black wheels. Black hats look great behind a set of chrome/polished wheels as it adds a touch of contrast. I haven't seen many black hats/black wheel combos.

This is the only good pic I have seen of said combo.

The front wheels are obviously not a problem because only a very minimal area is shown of the rotor hat. The back DOES look good but I can see how it does blend with the wheel. I just don't know.

The trick is the lighting, there are only a couple of hours of perfect light... my wife has a T2i and she takes pics of mine just to play around. Once I get my WSQ hood painted, ill use my PC buffer on it and then let her have at it... her cam is kick *** tho.. We offered at one time to meet up with some guys for FREE and let them get pics taken so she can practice but no one showed... This is when it was dirty and her camera still made a cool shot...

I have nothing on my car that is silver... So that wouldn't really work.. I have a red/black theme going

I know that you pay attention to detail.. How did you go about prepping and masking the rotor for paint? What paint did you use?

Yup you can only really shoot early morning till about 10 or 11. Then nothing between like noon to 3 as the sun is to high in the sky.

my car is gonna look so good

I wonder if I should leave the t-tops on or off? Turn the wheel at an angle or them the straight?

Same here with red/black. It would have to be the stock finish which looks exactly like this...

or black.

I currently have all rotors masked off and ready to go. Just need to decide

I am also curious about McNord's paint method.

How did you paint the edges exactly? Painting the edges (where the rotor vanes are) seems like a masking job from hell to get that perfect circle.

I think ou should be the guniea pig and bite the bullet and do it

As for prep, if it was me this is what I would do..

Sand the face with 1000 grit sand paper (dry sand)
Spray with brake cleaner to clean the surface. Or wash them with soap and water
Use a filler primer and put 2 light coats, then 2 medium-thick heavy coats
2 light coats of color, then again 2 medium-thick coats of color
Clear???

i just used a small foam brush and just held it there while i spun the rotor, whatever i got on the brake pad contact area i just wiped off before it dried. ive seen some people spray the entire rotor and just put them on a let the brake pad take the paint off but i wouldnt recommend doing that.

I just used the caliper paint from Checker auto after a quick sanding with 320 grit paper. Its held up good for a few years now.

Mine are powder coated black, edges too, I can't stand the rust look. It's never driven in the rain, but just the moisture in the air is enough to start them rusting
