Default Car Cover Scratches

Has anyone else with a California Car Cover had problems with it scratching their car? I haven't had mine that long and I'm already noticing some thin vertical scratches on both the front and rear quarter panels as well as the top of the spoiler. A friend of mine has one for his 30th T/A and it took a 1+ inch gouge out of the paint at the bottom of the driver's door after taking a beating in the north-central Montana Chinook wind all winter. Like his, mine also appear to be at places where the cover makes a lot of contact with the body when it's windy. I plan on doing a spot Zaino job on them to see if it takes them out. Only a couple of more months until I have a garage again...grrr. Is this a common problem with covers and if so, can they be removed with something? Thanks for any info.

Dawg...that sux! I have a Cali cover, but my car is kept in a garage too...so no wind and weather here. I can't say without seeing how to care for the scratch, but yes I have seen the wonders that Zaino's scratch formula can do. It restored my daily driver ('96 Firebird) paint job.

Good luck

This is second hand info, so take it with a grain of salt. I was talkin to a guy that works at a GM dealership's body shop about car covers and he told me that he would never use any kind of a car cover because of scratching problems. He mentioned that no matter how soft the inside of the cover is, dust, dirt, etc will get trapped in there and will then scratch the paint as the cover slides around in the wind. Just my $0.02.

On the other hand, mother nature is harsh on a finish, even with Zaino. I'd say you are pretty much damned if you do, damned if you don't. For me, I'd think some protection beats nothing. If you get a custom fit cover, keep the car fairly clear of particulates, and wash your cover regularly you'll end up ahead. But that's just opinion and I have nothing but hot air to back that up

I have never heard of a car cover scratching! I use a Wolf car cover daily parked outside at work and have never had a scratch. Your scratches might just be in the wax, try some detailer spray.

I use a Cal Car cover, but only after the car has been freshly washed. My car is Onyx Black no scratches. Put one on after the cars been driven or sat out in your driveway is like putting a big piece of sandpaper over your entire car. Think about it.

I always keep my car covered. It is usually cleaned every 4 days or so. I have had CalCarCovers on 2 cars with no probs. Like the others have said. Just keep it clean when its covered.

My neighbor and I both have black ls1's that stay outside year round and under a cover. We've had numerous brands and they all leave slight scratches on the high spots of the car. We never put them on a dirty car and usually the car has been freshly waxed. Over the winter is the worst. The car goes 5 to 6 months under the cover in a variety of weather. I tried a winter with no cover also and found the scraches from the snow and ice were worse then with a cover. The cover is the less of two evils.
