Default clear corner problem

my front drivers side turn signal just burned out, i go to change the bulb and find out the it has melted into the housing of the lense and i can not get it out, yet. this is the second set of clear corners that have melted like that. both of them on the drivers side, one set was from RKSports and this set is from afterthoughts auto. has this happened to any one else, i really like the clear corner look on my blue car and want to get another set, but do not want to have it melt like the prevoius two sets. any advice on brands or install help, stories or remedies would be appreciated.

thanks

I am noticing that on my OEM corner lights the main bulb is getting so hot it is melting the socket!

I have found through AutoZone (although they always seem to be sold out) LED replacement bulbs I found a set of red just to see if they'd work, and they do. So try that. I am (once I find them!).

so you think that the led bulbs from clearcorners will work and not blw fuses. i have heard that some of the led bulbes that you can buy will blow fuses in our cars. anybody out there that has used the bulbs from clearcorners?

They work for DRL's, but once you put your turn signal on to get the brighter flash it just blows the fuse (I think this was the same with Autozone's). I also found out that its because these are replica LED's, so they aren't even real which explains why it pops fuses. I have only seen one brand of real LED's that work for our cars and they cost $10-$20 a bulb and come in really good non-fading colors. I can't think of the company off the top of my head, but when I find it I'll post it up.

Well I haven't blown a fuse yet with the ones I got from www.clearlights.com. They were $30 for the pair. I did have to get an electronic flasher to replace the stock thermal one in order for them to flash for the turn signals, though.

I think the fuse problem is the flasher. The flasher expects the power draw from the incandescent bulbs. When you replace the bubls with LEDs, the flashers dont work properly. Ask Autozone about digital flashers, or flashers for LEDs. When you get that though, I think all the bulbs that it services have to be LEDs. I dont have any experience with this. I am just passing along what I gathered the last time someone had this issue with LEDs. There are no "fake" LEDs. The LEDs that APC sells are just cheap (low quality). A good LED replacement bulb costs double or more than what APC charges and has more (and better) LEDs in the unit.

BTW, the electronic flasher was $7 at AutoZone and is a piece of cake to put in.

If you don't find any L.E.D's at AutoZone try out www.clearlights.com. I have their bright white L.E.D.'s in, they run 95% cooler than regular bulbs and look almost HID.

ok so no problems with the lights from clearlights.com correct? i would need to get the 3157 and the 194 both in amber and since they are leds they would not melt the housing, correct. oh yea i would also have to get an electronic flasher. is that all that i would need?
would i have to get led bulbs for the turn signals in the rear also since i am upgrading the flasher unit?

thanks for all the input

I only replaced the 3157's. The little amber bulbs on the side don't put out much heat. I've never heard of those burning up either. The rear lights will be fine with the electronic flasher.

I don't know about their flashers. I got the Tridon/Stant EL12 unit at AutoZone. It is 6 ohm I believe.

It's under the dash to the left of your radio. Just take off the panel under the steering wheel (4 screws), turn on your blinkers, and you'll hear it. Piece.of.cake.

Ok I finally got this thing figured out.

To the left of the radio is indeed the turn signal flasher, and to the left of the steering column is the hazard flasher.
Steering cloumn almost makes a center line in-between the two flashers.

So I've replaced both flashers with EL12 electronic ones, and turn signals and hazards work properly.

Ok cool thanks.
I did replace a flasher last night that was to the left of the steerign column, but maybe that was the hazard flasher.
But either way, my battery died and nothing works right now... DOH.

is it true that you will never have to replace led bulbes because there is nothing to burn out or is that just a rumor that i heard? anyway the reason that i wanted to change the little red and amber bulbes is because the amber ones are turning silver looking, i think that the amber color is burning off or something like that. thanks for all of the advice i will be updating my bulbs shortly.

LEDs can last 10 years before they are half as bright as they were when new. The ones from APC are lower quality and probably wont last that long. Also there are many factors that affect the life of an LED (or any buld for that matter). You may be lucky and get a set that lasts for years. Or you may get a set where one LED in the unit blows out by itself. That being said, LEDs are a good bet for the money. They last longer, use less power, and emmit less heat than incandescent bulbs.

Sylvania has produced some LED headlights. They are still in the development stage though. The Cadillac 16 showcar has them. Eventually LEDs will replace incandescent bulbs completly.
