Default Morimoto Mini H1 Projector Retrofit in my 02 Z28 - SUCCESS!

Well, as some of you know, I tried this setup first with an Xentec HID kit, and I was FAR from happy. I then ordered a REAL HID kit, the Morimoto H1 kit, with a heavy duty relay harness, and oh my lord.. the difference it made.

Here is before, with the Xentec 5000k kit.

Doesn't look TOO bad in the driveway, right?

Here's the light output on the road:

Both headlights

Passenger side only (lens needed more cleaning up)

Driver side only

READY?!? Here's the finished results with the Morimoto H1 HID kit.
(Note: My camera's exposure was a little higher than the human eye, but they are ALMOST as bright as you see depicted here.)

Once again, the exposure is way up, they are NOT this glarey in person

This is the best I could get the lenses to clean up..

And now for my favorite, here's a video on the road. Be sure to click 1080p!

Big thanks to everyone who helped me out in my other thread, thanks guys!

Final opinion: I absolutely love this setup. I'm that guy that used to have HID's in reflector housings, in every one of my cars, and thought nothing more. But holy crap, what a difference. These don't shine in ANYONE's front or rear windshields, I'm not blinding anyone, and the squirrel finder lights up road signs amazingly, which you can see in the video. This was my first retrofit ever, and it is so simple with the Mini H1's. I'll try to get some pics of the relay harness/ballasts one of these days.

If you're thinking about doing this, don't think, just do it! Make sure to go through The Retrofit Source.

Thanks for looking!

I did go with the 55W Morimoto (5five kit). I am aware that these run too hot for the Mini H1's, and over time it causes the inside chrome of the projectors to bubble up. I have an eye issue and have enough trouble seeing at night, so I said screw it and went with the brightest option I could. I rarely drive at night anyway, maybe they'll last a bit longer than everyone else. To be honest, I figured the projectors were only $60 shipped.. so if that's what I have to spend again over time to see this well, I'll take it.

Like I said, my car rarely comes out anyway so we'll see what happens. After some time, I'm gonna pull everything apart and take a look inside just to see how they're holding up.

I'm running a DDMTuning 35w slim ballast into Morimoto D2H bulbs (A D2S bulb with AMP connections basically, for clearance reasons) and Valeo projectors. I'm not running a relay harness, but after reading through your stuff, I figure I should? I don't have any flickering issues, and my ballasts are plugged right into the factory headlight harnesses. Would I benefit from installing a relay harness? And I wonder if these Morimotos can run well with a 55w ballast if I was to swap it out.

What relay harness would I need too?

The Morimoto Mini H1's are "not stable" with 55W ballasts/bulbs. They run too hot and over time cause the inside of the projector (the chrome) to bubble up. However, I rarely drive at night, so I said screw it and went with it. I can tell you just from touching the housing, YES, they are a LOT hotter. So it's your own call, but if you don't drive much at night like me, go for it I guess. Just be aware that eventually you may need to swap out the projectors, and over time this "bubbling" will cut down output.

As for the relay harness, it's just so you're not relying solely on the power from your factory harnesses. If you don't have issues, I'd say.. eh? But I know every lighting guru will tell you to get a relay, which is why I did. Go to the Retrofit Source and pick a relay harness appropriate for your kit. I used the heavy duty one.

Can you post some pics on how you assembled your lights? I need to do this immediately. I have 50% windshield tint and shitty stock bulbs lol.
