Default 08 BMW M3 paint correction and Opti-Guard Coating

Client picked up this M3 after his last one was totaled by a hit and run driver. Thankfully the offender's license plate left a perfect imprint on the body so he was quickly tracked down. After picking this gorgeous M3 up and enjoying a few track days he contacted me for a correction detail. After looking it over we decided on a 90%+ correction and coating with Optimum's Opti-Guard. Over 30 hours went into this one and over 95% defect removal was achieved.

Condition upon arrival

Paint was very thin all over the car. Have seen similar readings on numerous BMWs lately. This was one of the higher readings on the car.

My DSLR camera battery had died so an iPhone pic had to do for this seriously thin reading.... Thankfully the defects here were minimal here and corrected with no measurable decrease in clear coat thickness.

After a battery charge my DSLR was back up for some more photos.

Some nasty deep scratches

Here are some before/after shots and 50/50 shots.

Looking better....but still a long way to go yet...

After medium polishing on the hood, the paint was inspected out in the sun

Hard water spots plagued the back end and lower rockers. Coupled with swirls and RIDS

Working with the awesome Mirka BP sourced out from Mr. Buff Daddy, Kevin Brown.

After compounding....

Fully corrected. Final polishing to be carried out. Tires scrubbed pretty good at the track.

Medium polishing step completed

Trunk fully corrected safely down to the edge

Final polishing completed

The sun would be set by the time the coating was completed so these were the only sun shots

Chip repair was carried out with a steady hand and careful application with a fine tip artist's brush

Even though the tires were about to be replaced with new ones (track day usage), I couldn't let it go without properly stripping the tires before dressing them.

Powdercoated wheels were cleaned up with Chemical Guys Matte Detailer. Cleaned the multi-spoke wheels nicely and left a nice finish behind.

Fully coated and dialed in. Final pics

......On the way to drop off at client's home, stopped for a couple more quick pics, with just a little brake dust from the drive.

Thanks for viewing!

Great work as always! I wish there were detailers around here who were as talented as you. Beautiful color on the M3 as well!

Is that interlagos blue? My step dad has an '08 M3 in the interlagos blue. What compound(s) did you use? The M105 didn't seem to cut at all with the PC on his. I've found BMW paint to be hard as hell and a PITA to polish with a PC.

I know what you mean. I did an 08 jet black 335i and it was a bitch. I had good luck with my Groits DA and Megs MF cutting pads with the D300 compound. I had to do like 8 heavy passes to get results though. It was what I had at the time. I don't remember what I used for the rest.

Great work as always Jeff! I haven't heard of that polisher before. Any reason you picked that one over the Rupes?
