Default California Dusters...

Been talking to someone on another forum about them. Fellow owns a detail shop. He has warned me about the damage they do, saying that while they may pick up the dust they are also creating very small scratches in the clear coat while doing so. Live on a very silty dirt road, so dust is a way of life. Paint on the bike is trashed so don't really care about it. But my Dart, well, that is a different story. He has suggested I use a sealer from GTech called C1 Crystal Laquer He said that he would still avoid the Duster but if I were to use a sealer such as this one I could get away with the Duster......Any thoughts????

Use a duster (or try and wipe the car off without washing it) and your paint will end up looking like this after a while (or worse):

Ouch..that is EXACTLY what Adam was telling me about. Question is what a good sealant, that you would reapply every now & then allow one to use a Duster? Adam was telling me that he has been using the GTech sealant for a while now. He told me that it is like putting a clear coat over the existing clear coat. He still was to wild about the use of a Duster but he did say that in the trunk of every car he details there is one. And that on the cars he has used the sealer when they do come back for a cleaning the paint looks good. The picture you posted is what my bike looks like. But the body work was crap right out of the gate, the paint was only marginally better than the miserable stuff under it so I don't really care about it. Going to get it repainted here in the next year or so....at that point I will take better care of it....

I know nothing about that sealant, but what you want is a coating. Look up CQuartz or Opti Coat. I put CQuartz on my car and I use detail spray and a very soft clean microfiber each time after I drive it and then put the car cover on. After 3 years, I have not washed my car once and I do not have any micro scratches/swirls. My paint is so slick, that bugs will not stick to the front at all.

I have no knowledge of the sealant either. I dust mine off with a wooden handled California duster my grandpa passed down to me. I do this every time before I take mine out of the garage. I also use a ton of the quick mist detailer with the micro fibers between waxes to get any bugs, tar, whatever off. My paint looks wet at all times

I used to live on a gravel road about 6-7 years ago, and drove my car for 6 months on it at about 15-20mph every time. I used a car duster <10 times and I can still see the scratches like pictured above on it to this day.

Opti Coat was suggested by the fellow on the other forum as well....

Just because you put a coating on the car doesn't mean it's gonna be some magic swirl repellent. Using a duster is gonna be a big no unless the car has been washed and never left the garage. And even then I still wouldn't personally use it.

Basically what he said ^. A coating will protect it the most, but in your case you are probably going to get mad swirls no matter what. I would never use a duster either.

Looks like my car is going to be an absolute mess.....I cleaned up my bike the other day, went out for a ride. no faster than 8 mph wile on the dirt road, about 1.6 miles each way. Back fender is brown, black paint is barely visible....

Whenever I see someone at a car show using one of those things I cringe...

"hand washing" a car has pretty much the same effect as the California duster a mass majority of the time lol.
