Can't wait either. I'm at work, looking forward to populating the board tonight. I'll send pics (I haven't tried posting pix here yet) of my progress. I soldered the two smallest ICs last night under the microscope, I sent Derek a pic, maybe he'd like to post it here. I think it gives a nice impression of the level of soldering required ;-)

I think I owe you an update after the last post. Circuit board is 2/3 populated now. Derek has a picture...
Took me a while to do because I worked section by section, testing in between. Anyhow...
-Power supply works
-Processor, in circuit programming and system clock work
-USB works. Windows automatically finds and installs USB drivers
- modified the boot loader to work with USB instead of Rs232
- Operated boot loader thru USB with hyper terminal.
- modified OLED driver to work with new port assignments
-OLED power up with boot screen and main screen normally
-RTC and CAN are populated, but have to write drivers first before I can test

Next up:
Populate a/d inputs, ALDL input, p4 UART input, GPS input circuits

I'll send Derek another pic when it's complete

Oliver got the circuit boards done and worked on programming this weekend as well as started the harness for his car. He built the ribbon harness for mine to connect the OLED to the main board but I will end up doing my own harness work for the rest.

Were up in the air about packaging. As soon as I have the boards physically in front of me I can design a module type housing in solidworks or 3ds max that would either be 3D printed or cad machined out of aluminum. Not sure which route to to go yet.

Main board with main harnesss

OLED connector. This connector is the same connector thats on the stock LCD odo.

Compass module. A module type housing needs to be built for this. I think it should fit nicely in a recessed location under the upper dash shelf.

Short vid to verify all the new stuff works

Default Update...

Okay, I wrote the Real Time Clock/Battery backed RAM driver as well as the beeper code this weekend. So now time as well as trip data are kept after ignition off! I hooked up the compass sensor and it worked as well, but I managed to fry the processor by accident :-(
Removing the tiny processor without damaging the board and installing a replacement was a major pain.
Didn't get more done this weekend because of that.
Next I'll make a harness for my car and test drive this baby!
I have yet to write some code for the fiero version, but the f-body version is almost done now I guess...

Smile More progress

I'm back from a business trip and made some progress again...

The PWM LED driver is working now, so you can hook up LEDs with a total current consumption of 700mA. Using strings of 4 20 mA LEDs that means you should be able to connect up to 140 LEDs with full dimming through the stock IP illumination dimmer. I have only connected a single LED for testing, I'll leave the exercise with 140 LEDs to the reader ;-)

ALDL communications with the Fiero now work as well, I can now display fuel mileage information - so it's time to put it in the car!

I spent some time building a third unit, which I should complete in the next few days. Then I'll have a test mule for the car, a development mule for, duh, development, and one to mail to the US for tests on the f-body.

And I started writing some HTML documentation for installation and firmware updating, but that's still in the early stages. So much to do, so little (spare) time

Wow, I am really interested in the PWM...I was struggling with this as the stock dimmer didn't provide the range of resistance I needed for the PWM kit that I used to really do much of anything. I've been (very slowly) working on fabbing up a custom setup to allow me to use the PWM I built out of the kit.

I'd love to have something plug and play that'll run off the OE switch and dim all interior lighting appropriately.

Talking Weekend update

Hi folks,

I've successfully tested communication with a 90-92 V6 f-body (ALDL P4) ECM today!
For some reason connecting takes 5-45 seconds after ignition on, but so does TunerPro, so the reason must be in the ECM or because the ECM is on my desk and not connected to anything but power and an ALDL connector.

Apart from the CAN interface all hardware has been bench tested now, and all major software components have been implemented and tested. I've completed and tested the third test mule.

I'll make the in-car harness tonight, so I can literally test drive the unit next week.

Sorry, I don't know how to post pics and vids, I sent them to lt4vert again...

Good morning everyone,

I'm pleased to report that the test drive went super smooth!
Everything (that was hooked up) worked flawlessly: Odometer, current speed, trip odometer, trip time, trip average speed and clock. Compass and Thermometer weren't hooked up (they're hooked up to my desk setup). On my Fiero it also showed current fuel consumption, which also worked very well! If only the sun was shining everything would be picture perfect!

Tonight after work I'll continue the test drive and I still have to build the bench test breakout box to be able to test (almost) everything on my desk.

Hopefully I'll have information on the enclosure by the end of the week.

I'm very happy right now, the perfect start into the week...

Thumbs up New splash screens are here!

LT4Vert made new splash screens, the Camaro Shield and a Phoenix, I'm almost done with the firmware files (there's still a gfx glitch in the Phoenix), I made two short videos, maybe LT4Vert wants to post them.

I think the screens are gorgeous! The colors look even more vivid in person, and of course there is no flicker, that's caused by the camera.

I've found some nice enclosures, but I still have to work out the details regarding machining the openings. But as you see, we're now moving towards the details and little odds and ends...
