Default I think this is a lost cause.

Any tips for cleaning off this corrosion? Or just toss it and find a newer one? This is why I don’t mind oil leaks - they prevent corrosion like this from happening. This is horrendous.

Good call, they're only $40. This one is going in the trash.

It would have cost you less than 40 bucks to get it blasted, and you could have used it as a core on a powder coated exchange. Were you planning to run without a front end accessory drive? Because the water pump covers about 70% of that cover. Must be nice to have $40 to throw around...

When I did mine I spent a good amount of time grinding and sanding the corrosion off. Then I painted it. Came out great.

**** getting it blasted. I'd much rather go to Autozone and buy a new one. Seriously in the time you spend finding someone to blast it, dropping it off, picking it back up, and painting it I've already picked mine up installed it put the motor back in the car and on the road again.

I used a soft wire wheel on a drill, Takes about 10 minutes. Then paint with VHT cast aluminum paint....like new.

I cleaned this whole engine with degreaser and wires brushes in a couple hours.

This is not oil and grime. This is heavy corrosion. A grinder wheel is having a hard time removing it. I was engulfed by a white cloud from the **** and decided $40 was more than worth the time, effort and respiratory damage. And sorry if I offended anyone by saying $40 is cheap. Everything is relative.

I love the idea of a blower on a LS engine. Do you have a build thread?

I still think that looks good.

No, It's just an old high mileage 5.3 that is probably going into my son in-laws 73 Nova to play around with. We put a 6.0 in it last year and he's happy with it but a blower motor that you can beat on without fear is more fun.

Don't worry about it. I know that corrosion well and it is horrible stuff. Hell, I'm buying new covers for my 6.0L and putting ARP stainless hardware on it. And you won't see half of it. It's all in the details you want to put on the engine. Have fun with it.

Sounds like you already came to a conclusion, but I just wanted to clarify. When I said it could be used for a core, I meant if you wanted to get one powdered, you could probably give this one to a PC'er for maybe $20 credit? Sure, they may charge $75 for a PC cover, but that's (obviously) only $55 or less once it's all said and done. And you don't have to deal with the grime, they would. This goes for all your covers, and some brackets. Just giving you food for thought for the future.
