Do I have to use a special paint? High temp, plastic fusion?

i don't believe you need high temp, the plastic intake doesn't get hot. i think plastic fusion would be a good idea though.

Well, I started painting my intake. I started with a primer. After about 6 hours, I put on a second coat of primer. After about 15 hours, I used a mild sand paper sponge and lighly sanded to a smooth finish. So far, so good. I then started with the first coat of silver enamel paint. The too to the primer okay but as I applied more coats, it turned out really nice. After about 4 coats, and 10 hours later, I used a very fine steel wool to smooth it out and shine it up. After that, I sprayed on the first coat of high temp clear enamel to seal the paint.

This is where the problem began.

As soon as it coated the intake one time, the paint started to crack. WTF!!! I don't know what to do from here. HELP!!!Please!SHould I strip it and start over again or just paint silver over the clear and leave it if it covers up the cracks?

Coats of paint should be applied within about 15 minutes of each other....they should only dry until tacky. If you wait too long, you have to wait for them to dry completely, which usually takes 24 hours or longer. The only coat you should need to wet sand is the clear coat...and you can avoid that by making the last coat a "wet" coat, which is just spraying a heavy coat and being careful to avoid runs.
I don't know what kind of paint you are using, but I have had excellent results with the Duplicolor auto spray paints.

I would sand the whole thing down again and start off with:
2 coats Duplicolor adhesion promoter
3 coats Duplicolor color coat
3 coats Duplicolor clear coat

Follow the directions on the cans.

Thanks. I figured I would have to start over again. Any tips on stripping this paint any easier than elbow grease? I will buy the Duplicolor stuff tomorrow. Thanks again.

What grit sand paper do you use to sand down the intake before the primer, to sand the primer, and then to wet sand? Just wondering b/c I'm about to start this project myself
