Default Type of Paint for Berger Panel

Whats up guys, i'm planning on doing a Berger panel set-up in the coming weeks, just wondering what kind of paint you guys have gone with. flat black or semi-gloss? i'm thinking flat black would be nice, but am still curious to see what you guys have used.

flat or matte black works well, i just bought a can of flat black engine paint, a can of spray on primer, and sand paper to make it rough so the primer would stick. turned out awsome and i like the flat black look.

do a search buddy.....this mod has been talked about for years.....i had mine done by a body shop and they shaved my trunklock as well....they also cleared it so that it would last longer than the people that spray paint theirs....
but the spray paint method does work pretty good!

Actually the stuff you should use comes from a spray can. Its called bumper black. Cant remember the name of the company, but its what gm uses when they respray the flat black areas around the headlights and foglights on the lt1 cars.

I just applied the second coat of simi-flat black on mine. I went a step further and filled in the Camaro lettering too (used bondo to fill in lettering and red filler primer). Lookin good so far….will probably post some pictures soon. Good Luck with yours…

Hrm have a question, the primer I am using is a black primer. I touched it after a coat had sat there for a bit and it seemed to have black dusty stuff on it. Is this normal? Do I need to sand it off after the final primer coat or what?

thats what wet sanding does gets all that dust and crap off the surface for a clean surface for paint or clearcoat and to take orangepeel off.

Why do you need primer unless you are sanding down to bare plastic. I just sanded through the clear and washed it off with soap and water then went over it with a tac cloth and finished it up with about 3 coats of flat black. Looks great.

paint sticks better to primer than to platic, its added assurance that the paint wont chip or crack off.

Ok well some of this stuff wasnt in the instructions in the sticky, but I did it anyway. (I hope I did it OK)

1) Sand with 400 grit till no more gloss
2) Wash really well, let dry
3) Apply like 3 coats of primer
Ok this is where I got confused. After I let the primer dry with all the coats it had this dusty film of primer or something on it. It was pretty horrible. I had to wetsand it with 1000grit to get it all off and it took forever. Really nasty little particles of primer. After I ended up sanding off most of the primer, it felt smooth and ok.
4) Right now I'm spraying the final "Bumper Black" semi-gloss. It is looking kinda splotchy though which worries me. I am going real slow making sure to not let the paint run, but it looks like some areas are more shiny than others.

Any advice / comments?

Really, the reason I used flat black is that I used semi-black like you did and I got the blotches your talking about,,went back to the store and bought some flat black and it ended up perfect finish

Did you wetsand the semi-gloss with like 1000grit and then spray the flat black, or just spray over it? Also what kind of flat black did you use. I might have to make a midnight run to wal-mart and try to salvage this project

P.S.: NEVER PAINT PARTS OF YOUR CAR ON A WEEKNIGHT
