I just did mine last week I used duplicolor semi gloss and it came out really nice just scuffed it up with some sand paper and painted it. much cheaper and comes out just as good to do it yourself

I will get you some pics up first thing in the morning I ma at work now but it came out perfect no runs paint is smooth looks great all I am waiting on are my stainless camaro inserts and a new ss emblem

I think the plan is...wet sand with 400. Apply flat black primer. Sand with 1000 grit. Apply semi-gloss paint.
Does the semi-gloss look a lot like the real GMMG Berger panels?

Wetsanding makes it smooth... How do you expect the paint to stick to a smooth surface?!?!? 
The primer is utterly unneccessary and just ads a pointelss step allowing more room to mess up...
Just take the advice of everyone on here who has done it...
1) Scuff up the paint with a Scotch Brite (scuff) pad... The point is just to take the shine off so don't go crazy...
2) Clean it off well (don't want any sanding dust still on it).
3) Spray it in many light coats (don't have to wait too long between coats, just let the paint get tacky... maybe 3-5 minutes between coats).
NOTE: You want to spray PAST the object (so you aren't stopping or starting over the part which could cause spatters) and overlap...
Paint the way you mow a lawn... Let each pass overlap the last... In other words if it was divided into six rows pass one would spray rows 1 and 2, pass three would spray 2 and 3, pass four would spray 3 and 4 etc....
Also, keep wiping the nozzle off so it sprays clean.
4) When you've finished the final coat wait 20 minutes and then re-install it.

Also, is there any way to clear it without making it look completely glossy? I just want a bit of added protection because I've heard that with the Berger panels you can't be too rough with them or the paint comes back off.

i used 800 grit wet sand paper to smooth some imperfections and went back over with some 200 gritty sandpaper to scuff it up. i used "DupliColor Ultra Flat Black". ill probably get time to put mine on sunday afternoon.

i tried using scotchbrite on mine but it didnt seem to scuff it up much so I sanded it lightly with 400 grit and then just painted about 4 light coates of duplicolor semi gloss black and it cam out lookin alot like the real berger panel do not wetsand as said above paint doesnt stick to a smooth surface I will still post pics of mine in the morning

basically)... definetly pointless though.
Paint only comes off (generally) if the surface wasn't prepped right... aka: wetsanded or not scuffed at all.
Clear is just another layer of paint... nothing magical.
