Yeah allot of people do just that there's an ideal length..and right now I forget he formula...but a butt load of people just cut them off thne pop the ball off the end and glue it back on the end of the stubb

I have a shorty antenna, I think it is a 12" that looks factory. Reception is garbage, only the strongest stations come in without static. If you listen to a lot of radio you will not like it but I just listen to my own stuff or the engine so I like it. It looks way better.

This is most likely due to the antenna being too long or too short..there is an optimal length to capture radio waves

well honestly, i hardly ever listen to the radio since i have my ipod in my car, and when i do listen to it, its only major stations. so i might give it a shot, if it turns out like crap, or the reception is to poor ill pickup a new one from bitviper.

You can determine the proper length of an antenna by using a formula:

Wavelength (in feet) = 984 / frequency (in megahertz)

Now heres the problem..there are over 1000 diffrent full cycle stations...then ther are over 100000 stations between them...

I cut mine down to 8" or 10", can't remember for sure. Same radio reception I had before. I do have another full length antenna as well in case I drive it out of town occasionally.

I cut mine down to exactly 12" and I saw absolutely NO change in reception.

Also, I do not live in or even near a town/city and the stations I listen to the most are quite distant from my house.

We cut mine and the only thing I dont get is a weak station and thats only by my house. Every where else it comes in fine. I went to the hobby shop and bought a RC car antenna top and put it on, works fine and cost me under $1 to do....

Actually adout the optimal antenne (sp), there is an optimal length for each station. so if you want a shorter antenne then figure out which station you listen to the most, and cut it to that length. I learned about this in physics, we had a navy radio opperator for a teacher.

Thats exactly what I was trying to stumble thru last night..its never going ito be perfect..hell even the stock antennas arent perfect for all antenns...but If I were going to cut one Id make it a multiple of the total length of the stock

That makes sense.

I guess my point was more that I noticed no difference when I cut the antenna off.

But like you clarified, that might just be due to my particular area.
