all i did was go to strong arm and mighty lift. they make oem struts and go the lenghts from them, then i found the same lenghts on orrorr and took a guess on weight. i think i did 35lbs.
stock hood 50lbs and the struts are 80lbs force each. so some math go me in the low 30s range.
the car is at a friends house, im puting a full spool in the rear, ill get the part number off the strut.

just fyi, i got a fiberglass ss hood, and got 35 lbs. struts, and they will BARELY hold the hood up. i guess im going to nee some stronger ones. if its cold out, they wont hold it at all.

The Orr & Orr part number is H-9505 and the second number is the poundage. I went with 35 for my Sunoco and it works perfectly. These are Stabilus brand struts.
The Stabilus part number for the 35 pounders is 752959. You can find other poundages using the PDF link on page 8.
These are for Camaro hood struts. Firebird ones are shorter. You can buy a strong arm brand for them. Those part numbers are on page 7.

Thanks for the information, guys. On ORR's page I guess I'm going to go with either the 35 or 45 pound struts that extend to 23" and compress to 13.2". Once again that's a little different than the stock 'bird struts that extend to 20" and compress to 14", but I don't see why it would be a problem.
Of course, we've got two members here who've had two different experiences with the 35 pound struts; they either worked great or sucked from time to time. Hmmm...

I put lighter hood struts on my car when I put my Sunoco hood on about 4 months ago.
Info was rather sparse and sketchy so it was tough to nail down a part number.
What I did was went to Strauss Auto with one of my stockers in hand and went through the struts they had.
Luckily, I found one that worked.
The part number is SG214012. The struts are made by Stabilus/Sachs.
The struts are rated at 175N (stock Z28 is 345N) which comes out to a hair under 40lbs.
Extended length is 25" and the compressed length is 15".
The only issue with these struts is that they are ~2" longer extended than the stock ones.
This means the hood will open more. I didn't have an issue with it but some might think it looks weird.
I'll see if I can get some pictures up tonight.

Went out and took some 20-30 minutes ago ....
BTW, about a week ago I opened the hood to see if the temperature had an effect on the struts.
At 35° there was no problem.

i heard this too when i picked up my hood... but i've seen creases developing.

Received and installed my #35 hood struts, part #H-9505-35. The hood opens too much, which leads me to believe that I could've gone with the shorter 19" strut. Also, the #35 rating may be too low. Once the hood is at a 45 degree angle the hood closes itself. Not a major problem, just a nitpick. I'd recommend this to anyone who has an aftermarket hood...
