finished the shift boot for my auto tonight
just kinda took a stab at it.. used a dremel with a cutting wheel to cut the shifter plate, got some leather material from the fabric store, doubled up on the red stitching... I just don't know how to get the boot to close up flush with the shifter... i was going to use a hose clamp on the inside edges of where the boot ended at the shifter, but it ended up not working that way... any other ideas?

Not sure how to help you but why did you decide to change it to a boot? Don't want to bash on your project but think it looks stock. But if you like it that is all that matters. Good luck with your project.

You think it looks stock? that's what I was going for... I changed it to a boot because I find it just looks crappy with that plastic sliding thing... and I know where the gears are... I haven't seen many people do an auto shift boot like this, so i figured i'd try out that creativity thing and see how it worked out. The redline shift boot looks hokey anyways... it just goes down around the actual shifter...

'Buy' a better boot. Don't make one.
Time to go shopping at the auto parts stores.
Many people have done this simply by buying a boot, & adding it to the stock console layout. There's really no need to modify the console by cutting it, is there?
Now do you have an unifinished edge around the cut area?
How are ya gonna fix that?

hmmm... I don't think cutting was such a good idea, because now there's no gear indicator for reference... I'm all about driveability for not only me, but for anyone else who may drive it so they know what gear they're in. it just seems like what you did was more damaging than beneficial.
why didn't you just make a boot to go around the plastic and cover over-top it?

You shouldnt be shifting an auto into first or second anyway. I have the manual console for my A4 and it looks amazing. To the OP, flip the shift boot upside down, slide it over the shaft and use a zip tie. Flip the shift boot back over to cover the zip tie. Works great.
