No that is not necessary unless you have some major pits in the aluminum or have alot of spare time on you're hands.

I have found that either Mother's Aluminum Polish or some stuff called Metal Glo works good.

Jorge said his guy went on to a new shop, and now charges $200 to do it. It was so much work, and he knocks it out in a day. (mine was about 5 1/2 hours to do) You still cant beat the price for the shop time.
