I always just scuff it up with a scotch brite pad (doesn't take a lot) and then shoot it in Duplicolor Low-Gloss black or Krylon Semi-Flat... No primer need IMHO.

Does the paint chip off easily doing it this way over powdercoating though?

Yeah, I figured it might've been. A friend of mine painted a stock grill on a 02 maxima black and he said it kept chipping. He ended up painting it for a 3rd time and took it to a body shop and had it coated with a really good clear and no more issues. But you don't want a gloss....so I'm not sure. Might see if they have a low luster clear or something maybe? I dunno.

My Stull billet grille chipped after painting it. It took about a few months though. Actually, I'm thinking of having the local Line-X guy spray it. I know that sounds crazy, but I like the rough texture. Plus with VRT it shines up well. We'll see.

Spray paint will definetly chip from rocks but that's the point, it is spray paint and you can respray it
