Re: Have you had problems with black outs?
I never had the probem that you describe above. I've heard of it happening, but never to me.
The problems I had with my blackouts were; Front: 1. Major PIA to get in and out, 2. Cut down on too much light, 3. Scratched the lenses. Back: 1. Cheap attachments to hold them on (they would come loose on long highway drives) 2. They would not fit flush with the shape of the lenses (I put velcro on the back to hold them in place).
I've since taken them off the front and back. I've got them on the parking lights too, those I have no problems with.

Re: Have you had problems with black outs?
The heat that causes it to melt is probably getting trapped in there. Maybe it hasn't happened to me because I was putting/taking my black outs on and off just about everyday when I clean my car.
Try taking your black outs off every once in a while and see if that helps.

Someone makes a spray on tint, that looks good if polished. You can spray a little or a lot. I followed a car on the Power Tour for a while with it, and was surprised at the ammount of light they let through.

Not one problem with my rear ones that have been on for years 24/7. Never take them off even when I wash the car. I had front ones for a while untill some joker hit me, no problems either. When I back up at night, coupled with my tint, it's like a black hole behind me. But they look bad ***.

It happened to my boyfriend's Black 98 Camaro's back lights. At first he thought someone had his car before he had a good chance to check it out better. We had no clue this was a common problem. You would think there was some type of warranty / replacement thing wouldnt you?

I know exactly what you guys are talking about.. and to tell you the truth I think that most of the time it is not even related to the blackouts. I have heard from the dealerships that GM put to high of a wattage bulb in there, and that with the DRL's being on all the time, the heat dimples will most likely appear, blackouts or not. It will be replaced under warranty if you still have it, and you can also replace the bulb with a lower wattage one to avoid it in the future. Ill look around for a part number. Later

I never heard of the watts being to high. A buddy of mine has his lights warped due to the blackouts but we never figured it because of heat.

He's talking about the tail lights, but you could also be correct. Another reason to disconnect your DRL's

Mine did it and I got them changed out under warranty. Haven't put the blackouts back on. So I don't know if it was the blackouts or the lights.

Re: Have you had problems with black outs?
It is *_NOT_* the blackouts that cause this! This has been brought up on ls1.com serveral times. I have seen several people with brand new camaros with these dents on the lights, seen test drive cars with the dents on them, and seen 93-97 cars that never had blackouts get the same dents. It is NOT the blackouts, it is the closeness of the bulb to the plastic and the heat produced by the bulb. I have had blackouts on my old 97 from the day it was purchased, to 6 months ago when it was sold, not a single problem. Had them on my 98 since start of 01 and havent had a problem either. I saw a local guy with a civic with blackouts on the back who replaced his bulbs with "cool" bulbs from napa and used a dremel to cut slats in the top of the brake housing to reduce heat buildup and he has had no problems. I have an a4 and drive 20 minutes in traffic everyday and that includes some extemely long stop lights. You can tint the lights with spray on tint as I have in a mod i did a write up for a short time ago. http://www.geocities.com/danslo/black/outs.html
Used testors (testors.com) brand transparent black window tint paint for model cars. Had it on like that for a good 6-7 months now, parked outside daily, and never had a problem with fading or chipping. Good luck.

Re: Have you had problems with black outs?
I had the black outs on my 98 SS and they dimpled my tail lights... I took the black out off and took it in to the dealer who promtly replaced both under warranty.
