Default LT1 console in a 98 Z

I know this might come off sounding stupid, but I am wondering how difficult it would be to swap an LT1 console into an LS1 car. Your either going or at this point, I know. Why, you ask? Well, I've been trying to figure out how to completely remove the part of the console under the climate contols so that its just carpet under there. I think the open look under the dash would look cool, and it would give you room to hang three gauges. Unfortunately the LS1 console is made as one piece and doesnt really allow for any easy removal of the cubby hole/second cup holder, etc. But the LT1 version does, or at least would be much easier to modify to create that open space and tastefully blend the "end" of the console with carpet.

Obviously I have a manual camaro so you need to use your imagination a little harder than I had planned. But I think that three gauges would fit nicely in that void, and give it a retro feel.

Also, you realize the LT1 style (more correct, 93-96 style) is NOT two piece... It is one piece as well.

You would have to cut the cassette holder off...

Oh totally, but it would be MUCH easier to blend it into the carpet than hacking up a 97-02 console. Does this sound like a retarted idea?

Gotcha. No. I say go for it... Although, it would be much easier to just put gauges in a 97+ console...

My console is missing that peice and the carpet look isn't bad. I ordered a bin but never put it on. Sorry, I don't have any pics.

I think the LS1's carpet is cut there though, for wires and stuff... Are you using a new carpet?

Oh I wasnt saying that it would be an instant thing, obviously some sanding and color matching would have to go on. Originaly I had thought about an entire different console from another car, but I remembered my old LT1 car and the cassette thing and thought about how I might be able to do away with it and give it a more open apearance.

Is that just a flat piece of plastic put down over the console with trimming behind it? A howto would elevate you to a god-like status, similar to the vent-pod mod.

^^Not my thread but here's a quick and easy how to:

Remove center console...

Remove cubby and cigg. lighter/accessory outlet...

Push a thick piece of paper onto the surface you want to cover with the ABS...

Trace the shape by pushing a marker into all the corners and outlining the flat area...

When done you should have a nice paper template to cut out...

Trace it onto a piece of cardboard, cut it out, test fit it...

Make adjustments to cardboard template, if there are none then cut the shape out of a piece of ABS textured plastic (1/8" thick maybe)....

Plastic weld/epoxy piece onto console....

Cut out two gauge holes with a 2 1/16" hole saw (can get for under $10 at hardware store, attaches to drill) make sure you go through your ABS plastic and the factory plastic beneath it....

Tape off everything except the plastic you added, spray with a grey color that matches your 1998 grey interior, let dry, reinstall and you are done
