A4 guys: how to dyno the car(keep it from kickin in 2nd)
Its obivious our cars will kick into 2nd gear from 60mph dyno pulls. I have no way to lock the verter up(no efi live). How can i get a decent dyno pull to do some tuning?
I see the 3-2 downshift mph is 70, so couldnt I do a pull from 75 or so?
can i edit the 3-2 "hot" and "perf" shift mph to like 40 at the dyno so it doesnt kick down , or would that fack up the trans?
ideas?
last time the car would kick into 2nd gear and I could never get a good pull(4 years ago). In fact the guy there blamed it on my trans because the car would go for redline?? Its been 4 years and lots of 11sec passes since though

stock w/a 3.23 gear 2-3 shift occurs at 79mph or so right? So start the dyno at 85mph... it's too high a MPH for the PCM to kick you down to 2nd
As for locking the converter... tap the PCM (I forget which wire it is... ), find the Torque Converter Lockup wire, and run a switch to ground... when u ground it, it will lock the converter

I don't think you can hurt the trans by lowering the downshift points. If you don't have a manual lockup switch, in the A4 TCC section you can change the third gear release tables in the MPH vs. TPS% for dyno purposes.
thanks guys.. i was wondering if you could just do a pull from 80-85. My 2-3 shift mph is 75 so that should be fine. I know it wont be a long pull, but atleast i can get some tunin done
I usually just go by the stall speed of the converter. Start the run at or above the stall speed and it usually won't kick down.
Harold:
Use edit and eliminate the downshift to 2nd gear above 40 mph at all TPS and WOT. Have the converter lock at 55 and do not allow it unlock above 55.
Then you can dyno starting at 60 mph and you'll be able to tune the car's torque through the midrange and get maximum TQ feed into your converter at launch.
On second thought, don't tune the car - I need to have a chance against you in the quick 8.

Use EFI Live, you can use the control panel and bi directional controls to lock the converter.
When I dyno mine, I take the tach up to about 3k and then lay the hammer down. That keeps it from kicking down on the dyno. Of course you are not getting good numbers below that, but its just a suggestion.
