FLT 4L60E GOES 9.25 @ 146 IN JR's C5 TODAY!
Most of you know the saga of my quest to drive a TRUE STREET LEGAL 9 SEC. C5. Chuck & Vince of Finish Line Transmission in WoodDale, Ill. have played a major role in my quest!!
My C5 started this year running in the 9.50 range. Dan Bills of FLP helped me to get the times down into the 9.40's during the Hot Summer weather.
Finally last week the weather got cool and I went to Byron along with about 400 other guys. Although I ran 9.41 a PB I could not get rid of starting line tire spin. Launching from idle (1,100 RPM) off the footbrake my 60' times are usually 1.39 to 1.44 but the tire spin kept me to a 1.59 60' best.
Today I decided to "try it again". DA was 1280 today. So far this year I put about 60 passes on my trusty FLT 4L60E all in the 9's and on Hoosier Slicks!
Because of last week I decided to run with lower tire pressure so the first run was at 12.75 lbs., launch was strong (turned out to be 1.44 60') but midway into 1st gear all hell broke loose and I thought I had "Wheel Hop" so I had to get out of it a bit ran 9.57 @ 145. It turned out to be TIRE SHAKE (according to the track guys) can you believe that! TIRE SHAKE in a C5 Vette!
I watched a few cars launch and decided to go to 13.25 lbs. I did a LONG SMOKEY BURNOUT PAST THE TREE! The launch was great (1.35 60') and the run was 9.25 @ 146 with a 5.91 1/8th mile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE TRANNY BANGED EACH GEAR FLAWLESSLY - IT WAS A THING OF BEAUTY!!
THANKS FLT GUYS IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU AT 1,000 HP MY 4L60E WOULD BE IN PIECES AFTER THAT TIRE SHAKE - IT WAS VIOLENT LIKE I NEVER FELT BEFORE!!!

JR's car has been a test project of ours for years. It does have a billet input shaft, billet output shaft, special valve body modification to allow the over run clutch to be applied in first through third in the D3 position, and soon to have a new part for the input drum. We like to use his car and a couple others, to test new products before we sell them to the public. So far it has been working very well for the hp JR makes. We are heading out to Byron Dragway Saturday to see what the car will do this weekend. Hope to get some video of the car in action. I guess last weekend there was a real bad NW head wind so we believe that the car has much more in it. Also the car has been running a conservative tune in it. With that being said I think this car has a 8.9X in it. Cool thing is we have another vette that will be running Sunday that went 9.21 earlier this year. They to are shooting for a 8.9x pass this weekend. The weather looks good so we might have some more updates on some of the fastest A4's around. Stay tuned! Vince

Just wanted to post up and say thanks to JR for a good season of racing. Sorry to see the car pretty much stay on the trailer yesterday but we appreciate your dedication. I guess the car had a couple issues. First being a broken blower belt that Jr was replacing when we got there. Also an issue with a coupler for the torque tube on the engine side making noise. JR being a smart racer decided it was best not to chance anything knowing that more damage could be done. I saw a bunch of customers at the track yesterday that ran personal bests. Speed Inc. had a track day with a few guys running our units as well. One of which was a F-body that with one of our level 3 4l60e units that ran in the high 9's. Also another C5 ran yesterday with a 9.25 @ 154 using a FLT level 5. Pretty happy with the day all in all. We did a bit of tailgating and had a good time. Sorry to see your season end this way JR. But that's racing! Thanks again JR. Vince

Vince -
Turned out that the noise came from a cracked flexplate collar, which is what in late model Corvettes the drive shaft splines into at the motor. I was LUCKY to catch it before it actually broke, as the motor would have been "free wheeling" being disconnected from the drive train.
I feel bad that I was not able to put the Vette into the 9. teens, or 9.0X's.
I had pulled the passenger seat and drained the gas down to 1/8th tank. That coupled with the "good air" (950 DA) would have easily put the times down at least 1/2 tenth from the 9.25 I ran the week before!!!
