You should have VERY little lateral movement. If you do, it's a good sign either the rear case bushing is worn and/or the extension housing bushing. Pull the extension housing (six bolts) and try to get a closer look.

Ryan: When you say "yoke is in", not exactly sure what you mean...driveshaft is in the car, car is on 2 post lift so the shaft obviously was pulled out from the tranny an inch or 3...thats whn I felt the ..say...1/16 inch or mor of movement, and enough to make a noise. This may be normal when on a lift...just trying to find out where I get a strong shift "bang"...not real bad, just enough to know its not right. Ive been told the grease is probably gone or was not applied when the tranyy went on a few months ago (noise is new...after 500 miles max on the unit).
Brains, Can I tell visually if the bushings are bad? I do have what amounts to probably an ounce of tranny fluid on my y-pipe suggesting at times some fluid gets past the seal. but also understand that may be somewhat normal after some hard accelleration. Any more thoughts guys? Ever heard of this "grease" and could a lack of it cause this noise?

hold on now, it depends if the yoke is in the transmission or not. If the yoke is installed, there should be very little, but it will have some. Now if the yoke is not installed it will move quite abit.

You can visually inspect a bushing best when there's no shaft going through it obviously, but you CAN give the shaft a good nudge and see if it has enough play to move around. The bushing should be loose enough ONLY to allow the shaft to turn freely. Pretty much the same idea as a cam bearing. If you see heavy grease slung on the bottom of the car, it's more likely from the U-joint leaking or just being heavily greased. If its transmission fluid, your rear seal is bad and/or the bushings are shot.

I have 2 4L60E's here I checked the output shaft... note the trannies are out of the vehicle just on the ground fully assembled.
The output shafts did move a little bit. Kinda weird.
