The third gear start is a limp mode condition usually caused by a transmission code. I would do as you have planned and get it scanned. Have you recently done anything with the transmission like a stall converter? Vince

If the fluid is not burnt you may want do some electrical checks on both solenoids. You could get lucky and just have an electrical problem (if you call that luck).

Have the code turned off with a tune. It's not uncommon to get that code with a big stall.

Well with that stall that code should have been turned out when th car was tuned for it , Since it went away I would guest its just a fluke that is caused by the stall. Have your tuner remove the test for it and you should be fine,
I realize you have had the stall a while but i have seen this happen a few times and who knows it may not happen again
