What have people seen from steep gears with a stock cam? If you did a cam swap after the gears did you pick up more than you thought?

Basically do you think you were over geared and the cam basically made you gears "work"

A guy I know has practically the same mods as me...both of us have a 3600 stall, both y-pipe and headers, both LS6 intake, both on stock suspension, both with LS6 intake, both with nitto 555rs, he has an open Y, I have a catback. I think he put down a few more hp too, but I am not positive.

The big difference is he has a 12-bolt with 3.42s and i got a 10-bolt with 2.73s. We raced and he had a passenger. I got him off the line by a tich and pulled about a fender or half car. Somewhere in there. So I'm not seeing the difference in a gear swap.

He's run a 12.45 and i haven't run mine at the track, so we will see when I do i guess.

IMO with a Big Stall, gears don't really do much...That just seems to be the general consensus on Tech

Well i just got my stall and 4.10 in. I also am open headers have taken some weight out of the car. But it is night and day difference. The 4.10's are great even after the stall has flashed. But with the loudness and other changes its hard to pinpoint how much gears helped. From a roll im sure they helped. Im a lil hard pressed to think that they didnt give me any game.

When my car was stock with a stall it ran 8.32 with 2.73 gears i replaced them with 3.42 and it ran 8.21 in the 1/8

Now my car has a 440ci LSX and with 3.73 gears it ran 5.77 with a 1.36 60ft
I replaced the 3.73 with 4.11 and it went slighly better 60ft 1.32 but didnt run but a 5.78 both passes where dead on 124mph so IMO the 3.73 was a faster gear.
I am know going to a 3.42 gear this weekend and think it will pick up a bunch

See this is why i doubt my gear choice now. Guys that drag their cars a lot... I mean a lot. Never seem to see the huge gains that some see. IDK but i see that a lot. But with as loose as my stall is i couldnt imagine 3.42 or 3.23.

What do you guys think gears would do from say a 40-60 roll? Say 3.23's to 3.73's

i would consider gears if i was running a stock stall or if i had 2.73's. if i ever blow my 10 bolt i will probably go with 3.42's.

If you daily drive your car you dont want 410s UNLESS you do no driving on the interstate. I was 3000 at like 70 mph I believe. Gas mileage sucked. And, maybe unrelated, it blew out my tranny, which in turn fucked the rear end. GL though!

yup that is what i think too...gears are over rated...should be one of the last mods...i dont think stepping up to 3.73s or 3.90s are going to help me that much...i hope they do, but at max i am guess only a tenth...

i mean i am pulling a 1.38 now in great air...

On my truck, I changed from 3.42s to 4.10s. I was seriously disappointed when I drove it from the shop. It wasn't "night and day" like many said it would be.

I race every week during the summer. Tuesday T&T at GIR. I like the sleeper look of a small tire car. I have gone through 2 sets of 4.10's shifting into OD on motor, back to 3.23 and broke the carrier to 3.42 now. Bottle fed cam only full weight car. I am swapping heads soon and will get a 9'' soon. When I get the 9'', 3.25 gears will be installed. My goal for the '09 season is to 60' in the low 1.4 to high 1.3's and trap in the upper 130's - low 140's. I'm not setting my goals for an ET. If I meet my goals everything will be working right.

Bump this up. Would like to get more input.

Again what have you guys notice in roll's after a gear change?

What about time increase on the track? Did it seem to come only in the 60 ft? or in mph?
