Default Any real gain from gears?

Ive been going over lots of posts since me and "modularspeed" had a conversation.

Lots of people report no gain from gears especially when the switch to a gear as steep as a 3.73 or 4.10 in auto cars. Im not talking about feel i mean a cold hard improvement in performance. How is it that the gears would not have some kind of affect on the car at all? Positive or negative i would think their would have to be a pretty noticeable difference going from say a 3.42/3.23 to a 4.10. Would love to get some people who have gone back and forth on gears while keeping a very similar combo. Would be great to hear from the sponsors since you guys typically have a lot more cars as references.

Also what about guys who have ran steeper gearing and bumped up tire size? What changes have you guys noticed?

Im going from 2.73 to 4.10s but adding a stall ,taking out weight, new exhaust, ram air kit etc. So im sure i wont be able to see what the gears did for me.

Are you running any kind of stall? PLEASE post any changes you get sir.

Dude gears make a diffrence do you remember when we rode in my car after I got my rearend back on did you feel a diffrence from your car? I know when you first raced me car I had 323's I think it might have been 273's i'm not sure but I think when you your ride put back together you will be very happy for a week or two, then you are going to want more mods then it 's back to saving.........

But I think that you will but that's just me

Yeah, let me know, since I won't be making the switch until the snows off the ground and it's a little warmer.

My *** dyno tells me that my 3.73's (from 3.23) made a bigger difference than my longtubes or/y and catback.

Your car Picked up a lot. But you are also on the stock stall. But i see lots of people on like the cam only list and stock internal list that are running solid times on stock gearing. Or people that have add steep gears and say it didnt do any different on the track. It revs faster and makes more noise which has alot to do with feeling faster and also they make the huge stalls we use feel tighter but i just see cases where people say they picked up NOTHING from gears on the track. Idk... I race on the street myself so lots of low rolls and stuff and seen lots of cars with a fat gear and a good tire yanking people with a lot more car...

3.23s with no horsepower mods but plenty of suspension mods=consistent 13.70s' at 2 different strips(Thompson and Norwalk) and 24.5 MPG for 8 trips from Cleveland,Ohio to Orlando,Florida and back.4.56s' with same no mods/mods=consistent 13.20s' at those both same strips and 21.5 MPG on an identical florida trip.

How do you get 21.5 mpgs with 4.56s LOL. You must drive 45 mph. I usually cruise at 65-75 and average 19-20 mpgs. I have 3.23s

I would like to see some cold hard track times on this question. I have also heard of instances where gears did nothing.

i gained 4tenths in the 1/4 and it woke the car up all over the range. I went from 3.23s too 3.90s and love em! Im an auto and i would go 4.10 if i could do it over. Im about to put my SS4000 in the car and then its nasty time.

See and lots of the guys in here are guys with a stock stall. I know they are people who have not gained. And im not asking if i should do it. I think it helps a lot. Thats why i went with 4.10's. But i still see people not gaining anything. Would like to hear from some more people.

It has a lot to do with engine torque.

gears are relative to a setup. In any case where u need to make the car rev faster , for example a large cam, u will go faster. Over gearing a car can also slow u down. Gears need to match your setup just like everything else.

I'm swapping out my 3.50 to 3.00. Need to pick up some mph at the track.
