My wife's car is a stock 98 Z with 3.23's. My 02 had 2.73's with no other mods.
Her 98 flat out beats the snot out of my 02.
I of course couldn't have that, so I installed 3.42's in the 02. Cars run about the same now ... hehehehe.. Can't have momma beating up on me.

No real info for the OP's orignal question but, lol
I had an 01 Z/28 with stock stall, a 4 year old set of TEA 5.7 stage 2 heads, 02 LS6 cam, with stock exhaust manifolds and cats, 12 bolt with 4:10's that ran 12.8@110.
The car was real fun to drive, any pressure on the gas pedal and the car wanted to go, you really had to pay attention. Another cool thing was you could give it the gas in 4th gear and it would stay locked up to a certain point. On the freeway at 65, I got around 20-21mpg

Guys this is not a cut and dry thing, it totally depends on the combo.
What size rear tire? Where is your torque peak? Where is your HP peak? Where do you shift at? What is your converters rated stall speed? How well can you hook off the line?
There's probably more i'm not thinking of. The experts can probably select the best gear for your combo; i'll have to do trial and error I guess.
I'm throwing in a set of 3.73 gears with my G5x2 and having my converter restalled to a PT4000. I'll see how that works. I may do a run with the 3.23 gears just to get a baseline, but the powerband for the G5x2 is a little higher then a 228-230ish cam.

3.23s with no horsepower mods but plenty of suspension mods=consistent 13.70s' at 2 different strips(Thompson and Norwalk) and 24.5 MPG for 8 trips from Cleveland,Ohio to Orlando,Florida and back.4.56s' with same no mods/mods=consistent 13.20s' at those both same strips and 21.5 MPG on an identical florida trip.
everyone else is saying, well i didnt do only gears.. but i did put in a stall full bolt ons a cam heads intake and it felt like it made a difference..
gears are going to help.... period... just like a stall.. they both get you out of the hole better and in your power band faster.. going from 323s to 342s probably isnt going to show you an improvement.. 323s or 273s to 373s or 410s is going to show an improvement along with 342s to 410s..

True but not all cars fit a 28 inch tire or bigger on them. In my case gto's mostly run a 26 inch tire vs all the work to put a 28 inch tire on them. Also some guys dont build the cars all out at once. Some go little by little so at one point the 26 inch tire is great then the next thing you know your RPMs are maxed and you need to either go to a bigger tire or change gears. I know some 9 sec gto's that run a 28 inch tire and stock gears and still hit the rev limit before then finish line. This prob is more common in autos vs standard cars.

Well like i said i went ahead and put 4.10's. But I did so much other stuff i cant tell what the gears did. And of course you can run out of gear. I was more talking about the people i see running faster times than they did with more gear when they werent hitting the limiter.

Damn T/A's lol I dont know what GM was thinking. LS2 motor with a factory 245/45 tire. You have to roll the fenders and put drag bags to get the 275's to fit good and for slicks on the gto's.

i just recently did a gear only swap last year. i had 2.73's and my best pass netted me a 1.96 60ft and a 12.70@111mph. i swapped my rear to an extra i got off a friend with 3.42's and my best was 1.77 60ft and 12.13@112mph. this was in the 98' in my sig all the same mods.

the 12.70 was in the spring, 12.13 was late summer.
with 2.73's and a th400/4000 stall i could not do a burnout without a waterbox and could launch as hard as possible on the street without spinning. 2nd gear would top out at 115mph (trapped 111mph)
with 3.42's the car really woke up, i have traction problems on the street even with my new mickey thompson ET radials. and i actually use some of 3rd gear in the 1/4 mile.
i still think alot of potential is held back from the tuning on the car. the car was supposed to be tuned when i bought it but it had a cam when i bought it and it had no lid/ported tb/ls6 intake/headers/exhaust, and the PCM is locked. so maybe the tuning had an impact on the horrible 60ft and lack of being able to do a burnout with 2.73's

i know this isnt a LS1 but it is in the LS family. a guy in my town has a 98 chevy truck single cab stepside. and he had 2.73's everytime we would race i would completely walk off from him on the line(neither one of us spinning) oh and i have 3.42's. and then he had some 3.73s installed, totally different story. after he got them installed he would put a half a car on me as soon as we launched. so im pretty sure gears help.

I had 275 50 R15 M/T radials (26" tall) and 3.73s best was 11.36 @ 119.75 with 1.54 60'...
Switched to 275 60 R15 M/T radials (just shy of 28" tall) and 4.10s...with no other changes I went 11.23 @ 121.18 with 1.52 60'...same track, similar conditions...
I had thought that 3.73s with a 26" tire would act very similar to the 4.10s with a 28" tire...I was looking to use the 28"s to make 60's more consistent and didn't want the taller tire to kill the gearing so I went with 4.10s...
The end results speak for themselves with my n/a combo...The car pulls like crazy everywhere and actually goes through the traps at 6300 rpm as opposed to the 6000 it saw before...Its a whole different car that is a blast to drive...and I drive it everywhere...
