price?

A local transmission shop quoted me $600 to remove my transmission and install a built 4l60E that I would be supplying. Is that a fair price?

i guess it depends on where your from?

i paid $325 for removal & install of the new trans @ straightline performance in ILL. where my cars trans went out, so i had them do it instead of towing it home to IN......

seems like a lot to me.... I think the average rate at an independant would be about $85/hr....... so....... you think it should take over 7 hours to swap a trans? I would call a dealer and ask them what the "flat rate" hours are for a CP trans replacement and multiply that by your average local shop rate.

What type of vehicle are we talking about here? $600 in an AWD truck would be a good price in my eyes. Now in an F-body it is a little high. Then again some shops do not like installing customer supplied parts so that might have something to do with it. It's like going out to dinner and supplying the chef with your steak. I would charge you extra to cook it.

It's a 99 Trans Am. He also said he could remove, rebuild, and reinstall my transmission for $2500. He would make it so it could handle 500 rwhp, but he didn't say what parts he would use. That seemed excessive to me considering I could get a brand new tranny that will handle that much power for about the same price.

Price on the rnr sounds high for your car but getting back to what I said earlier about installing customer supplied parts I see their point. For $2500 installed I would get a list of what they are going to do and compare it to what others offer to see if you are getting your monies worth. Vince
