Default Those with aftermarket converters step in...

I'm doing some thinking into torque converters for a car I'm likely buying and want some advice on what stall to go with. The car's a bone stock 00 SS A4, has a lid, THAT'S IT.

It'll be my daily, so I want to keep semi reasonable gas mileage. I don't mind losing a mpg or 2 in the city, but don't want to go much more than that. Highway is obviously irrelevant, and besides I don't do THAT much highway anyway.

So who is running what and what kind of results are you seeing? I'm thinking of going 2800 or so, I don't need an animal, just a quick street car that can go to the track and bang a consistant 12.5 and go home.

I don't want to start cutting it up or making it into a ***** out race car so I'll be going for full bolt-ons, a tune and possible a drag radial, but ideally I'd really like to see 12.5 on a street tire.

Any help would be appreciated.

id have to agree here... i went with a yank 2800 and wasn't impressed much by it. didnt lose much for mpg's though.
see if someone has a stalled car near you and go for a ride to see how well you like that particular stall.

I had an Edge 3200 and it was great on the street, cut 1.6Xs on a DR at the track. Sorry I never figured out gas mileage loss though

thats what im runnin and i love it! If you get a small stall now, chances are that you will want to change it when you start throwin more parts on the car. Converters arent cheap but they are DEFFINATELY worth the money. Ive had a vig 3800 and a yank 3600 and i would still like to go bigger!

i have a vigilante 3200 which i hear is really a 34-3500. but after driving it with a mild cam, you can definitely step up to a little more stall. go with a 3800 size stall converter.

Give one of the supporting vendors a call and let them know what you want out of ur car and let them set u up with the right stall. Nobody knows their converters better than them! Lol

3000+ converter or your wasting your money/time IMO..

Vig. 3200 has my vote.. Will be more like a 3500-3600..
Cut low/mid 1.5 short times..

I would suggest calling Yank and consulting with them. They have a number of good options between 3000-4000. One should suit you.

I had a TCI 3000 and went to a Yank SS3600. There's not a huge difference. A 3000-3200 may suit you just fine. Oh, and I lost about 2 mpg in town with these converters compared to stock.

Street Racer in Houston used The Vig 2800 to crack into mid 12's with stock motor and exhaust (did have cutout) back in 1999. Very strong little converter. I'm thinking about getting one.

I've had 3 Vigilante's all performed very well. I'd say for a bone stock car get a 3000-3200 Vigilante. Call Jack or Vicki and talk to them and they'll get your where you want to be.

X4 on the Yank SS3600. Very streetable converter with great performance. Real nice street/strip converter that will certainly allow you to grow if you mod down the road.

Id go with a Circle D 258mm 2800 or 3200. A fortress like billet front face, furnace brazed like crazy, tough as nails and a low STR, like 1.6 or 1.7 so its street manners are fantastic. Customer Service has been among the best ive ever experienced

I would go with an FTI SRLS billet 9.5" 3600 stall but I am a little biased.

I like where your heads at. ALot of guys wanna dive in and do motor mods first, but I think the stall is one of the best things you can do for the a4. Completely changes the car. I DD a pt4000 and I dont notice it being too loose anymore. Although im about to buy a truck so I can do some less "street friendly" mods

I've had a few diff converters from a few diff places now, and here's how it has worked for me:
A stall makes it sluggish when you are at partial throttle, but a beast when you are all the way in it. Bigger the stall, the more it slugs with less throttle, and the more snappy it is at full.
If you have/get a lockup converter it shouldn't affect hwy driving at all.
A 32-3600 will put you right in your powerband when you hit the gas in a stock/bolt on car.
